School Project for Reef Biological Filtration

Do I really need all that? I am thinking even more simple setup. No use of the filter system at all. A bare tank, I now have a possibility to use 39in x 16in x 18in tank.

Use a wave maker, have rocks to do filtration or colonies bacteria, plenum for additional bacteria and sand...with various life mentioned above with only 1 fish n 1 coral plus feather duster etc. nothing too complicated.

Would it be possible to ditch the filter section shown above in the back of the tank?

No you don't need all that. Maybe.
What you need depends on what you put in the tank.
You can do it in a jar. Its been done.
The OP wanted an explicit filter demonstratable for a school project.
If you keep the number of animals low you need a tank a light heater and 2 wave pumps. Just do water changes. It is food for the fish and not the fish themselves that usually makes filtration necessary.
