Schuran reactor problem.

Hello all,
I bought a Schuran Jetstream 2 reactor last July and it developed a crack in the main body. It leaked water all over my finished basement floor! I have been E-mailing Schuran to find out if there is a warranty and they emailed back one sentence to email pictures. I promptly did and I received no response. I emailed like 6 times in the past 3 days with no reply. I even pleaded with them, telling them I am loosing animals because of this! No reply. So folks I got bit and I am here to say do not deal with Schuran unless you want to be in my situation. Thank you for letting me rant, Dan.

Sorry to hear that purplereef.

I'm not trying to counter everything you say, however, all my experiences (and experiences of friends) with Schuran products and even their customer service have been awesome. That's why I'm such an advocate for Schuran products.

I took the reactor to the LFS where I bought it. The owner didn't know of a warranty. We tried to glue the crack and a lot of little vertical cracks were then visible. It is almost like the acrylic they used was really old. The LFS owner said he has never seen any thing like it before. He said maybe a 8 year old reactor would crack like that but not a 8 month old reactor. He also said he would get an unbiased acrylics expert opinion on what the deal is. So here is where I hurry up and wait to see what happens. Schuran hasn't contacted me or the LFS owner and I really don't expect them to. If this particular LFS owner is going to carry any more reactors from Schuran then they need to step up to the plate and make this deal good! He is currently out of there reactors because he sold out of them. I am just giving you guys a real life scenario of what Schuran is like! Don't get stung.

Can you post pics of the crack? I want to see why Schuran wouldnt respond. I have the same reactor and want to be aware if something does happen.

Yep here you go.

I don't have pictures of all of the little vertical cracks that developed after we tried to glue it. The reactor is at the LFS so that the LFS owner can show the acrylic expert. Dan.

I had the same problem with my jet stream 1 but it was from over tightening the wing nuts on the bottom of the reactor. This caused a hair line crack.

Fortunately I bought mine from Custom Aquatics who were great. They got into contact with Schuran for me and since the wait would be a long from to have the reactor body shipped from Germany, CUstom Aquatics removed an existing reactor body from one of the reactors they had in stock and sold it to me, so I did not have to wait for months for the body to be shipped.

The reactor body by the way cost about 300 dollars by itself.

wow. good info to know. now i have to be over cautious not to crack mine. good reactor performance.. but maybe a bit delicate from your guys experience.

I think it is the pressure variation from the different wing nuts. I think it is a very poor design and not german like at all. But the lesson I learned is that the nuts do not have to be tightened very tight at all because once the clear gasket is compressed, no leaks.

Schuran only uses the highest quality acrylic available, that's why their products last a lifetime. I can't think of a reason why a young reactor would brake.

Purplereef I think your case is just a fluke. If Schuran doesn't contact you back don't give up. Call them, e-mail them, whatever it takes. That's not really acceptable on Schuran's part. Try posting on Aquarium Obsessed's sponsor forum, they might be able to help you contact them.

"I am just giving you guys a real life scenario of what Schuran is like! Don't get stung." <------ That's not the Schuran I've dealt with many times before. I've only had the best of experiences with their products and the hundreds of people I've talked with on Canadian/European reef forums about Schuran have said their products and customer service is great.

Thanks guys. I will not give up. I am just really disgusted right now. I knew getting into this hobby it's not for the poor, but you spend 900.00$ on what I thought was a high end reactor and maybe you could get something by way of a better customer support team. You might be right about overtightening the wing nuts but what about the vertical cracks that happened when we tried to glue it? I now believe the acrylic was faulty in the first place.

mine did the exact same thing. i covered it in "amazing plumbing goop" just because i had some and it stopped the leak and i have had no further problem and its been 2 years.needs to be dry when you put it on and i did not use the one that said "marine" on the package/tube

Restricting the output of this reactor will definetly crack it....if you have Tap plastic store in your area, you could buy weldon 9 and fix this issue. hth.
