So I have two Scleros and they were doing great until I went on vacation for 7 days. In trying to revive them I ran across a number of passages that refer to them growing naturally in an upside down to sideways position. Could this be one of the problems with keeping them? Are the maricultured ones we are getting now grow upright or upside down? Is it even a big deal? I switched the one that is doing well today just to be safe. What does everyone else think?

I don't think they require upside down positioning or even like it. Mine always stays upright just like my dendro. Sideways positioning might be helpful depending on the flow like if you have good undercurrent. If it is slouched and touching the gravel then that also might help. Give it time and excellent water quality hopefully it has enough in it to recover. Best of luck please keep us updated. What are you feeding?

What I mean by them not liking the upside down position is they end up curving upwards so they are upright anway.

For their position there should not be any issue as long is they are receiving good flow since they are grown in the farm in an upright position. In addition they were fine in that position prior to vacation.


I know in the past you mentioned while you were away your daughter was feeding your corals a frozen mix you made up (if I remember correctly). The other corals in the aquarium looked well when you returned (growth of spiral coral). Your feeding and husbandry went back to same as before you left, correct? Was there any other factors that could have changed since you returned? Media change (carbon or GFO), RO filter change, higher aquarium temp etc.

No nothing has changed. Who knows? I was wondering if it was easier for them to inflate and stay inflated upside down. Mike, do you know for a fact that they grow them right side up? That was my main question.

Easier to say what I am not feeding. LOL They get the Fauna gorgonia system, DTs plus RN's roti-feast and Oyster-feast, 8 times a day by auto feeder then the fish get fed twice a day by auto feeder so they get the fish waste. In addition Cyclopeeze once a day.

As far as I know for farm growing the are grown upright. I have never seen a picture of them grown upside down in the farm beds, but I could be wrong. There could be newer techniques for harvesting.

Now for in nature, they should be able to adapt to upright, horiontal or upside down. As long as the current and food source is there, nothing should prevent them from growing in any position.

Well it is not helping the one but the other has never opened so large before. I will leave it and see if it keeps doing better.
