Just wanted to say that I've seen tissue recession on scolys where the skeleton was visible in locations with no other coral nearby. My LFS has a DT with this going on but much more advanced stages.
So other things can cause this in addition to stinging IME but I've never seen a definitive answer on the root causes. Although I've never owned one, Ive seen similar recessions on lobed brains. I think the CORAL RESCUE thread on this forum has some examples of saving some really heavily damaged specimims.
