Scratches in pump

i would be concerned that cavitation is causing this. your shaft should show no impact issues unless debri is the culbrate. do you get a pulsating sound? thats cavitation most likly. not good beats the impellor to death!

I'm not sure what cavitation is...if the sound is pulsating (and I'm not sure if it is) it's a very fast pulse.

I assumed the culprit was debris...the shaft of the impeller and the "hole" in the pump that it fits into have corresponding gouges...as if a little piece of debris got in there and tore up the impeller and the wall next to it.

What do I do now? Should I try to smooth out the grooves, leave them alone, or toss my pump in the trash?

Since Mags are not that exspensive I would just replace it while it is still running. You don't want it to fail without a replacement.
