Scratches - Pain in the glass

Cerium Oxide doesn't "fill in" the scratches. Like any other polishing method - your grinding down the glass around the scratch to make it one level surface.

Sony had a method for their old tube tv screens where they used three types of rare earth - Lanthanum, something I cant remember, then cerium for the final.

I tried a kit from the eastwood company several years ago on a used tank I thought I could refurb. It worked removing the scratches, but the optical distortion from material removal was way more than I expected it would be, even on small scratches. I wound up with a new tank. I found the "lens" effect was as annoying as the scratch.

Well, for the price I paid and fairly cheap cost of the powder and a felt wheel, I'll give it a try. I think a lot of the scratches will disappear when filled with water, but I'll polish the anyway, or try ! :crazy1:

How bad were yours and how much time ?

I read that one guy used 1,200 and 1,500 grit sandpaper then cerium. ???????

This is the kit that I used:

It would be ok for a couple/few areas, but I had quite a few repair areas. If the scratch was barely caught by your fingernail, then the results would turn out well. If it was a harder catch going over it, then the amount of glass to grind down would result in too much distortion, even with water in it. I'd still give it a try and see what you think.

I've found that most scratches look minor when very clean, but the algae grows in them and isn't removed by the cleaner magnets and needs to be scraped with a blade which I don't seem to get around to doing much. If you grind too much glass away, the cleaner magnet will skip the area as well.
