Screen for a Blue Dot Jawfish?

Hello Reef Central,
I need to make a screen for a blue dot jawfish I ordered today. Getting it on Tuesday, so i wanted to make something that will help me keep him in the tank. I don't want to take the chance of him jumping out while I'm working or not home:sad1:.

Im thinking egg create and some sore of mesh to close some of those holes. Would this dim the my light at all?

Any other suggestions? I don't want to use glass for the heat and light reflection it causes.
Thanks everyone.
Robert.

Sure, you can use egg crate but it will block some light. You can also pick up a diy screen kit from one of the big box hardware stores, then use bird netting, which is black, instead of using actual screen. Or even better brs sells clear netting. I think brs actually sells everything you need, but I just get the clear netting from there. It makes a really slick low profile cover that doesn't block the light and no escapees! If you have cords going into your tank, you can cut one side of the screen frame you make a little shorter, allowing the cords to run behind one corner. They're really simple to make.

Mine are DIY screen tops - the frames from HD/Lowes, the 1/4" mesh from BRS. Eggcrate won't even slow the jawfish down on it's way to carpet surfing, and will have the added benefit of blocking a fairly substantial amount of light. I made them in two sections and just put a small slit in the rear pieces to allow for cords to go through. The front pieces remain easily removable.

I did the full screens but man that's a great idea doing a split screen. Really small investment to save a $100 fish haha...

Made mine from diy screen parts from Lowe's and bird netting. Had to double the netting because it was 1/4 squares. Lets a ton of light in.

make sure you get the 1/4 inch. I used 1/2 inch at first and lost a couple wrasses. Don't see how they made it through 1/2 inch, but they did. Lesson learned.

Thank you everyone.
Great alternative to what i was planning on doing.
I just placed an order for the clear netting from brs. Hope it gets here with my fish.

So this screen doesn't block much light? Glad to hear that, don't want dark spots in my tank.

I haven't noticed the slightest difference between the covers on or off. I think you'll be really happy with it!

Cool, im excited for my fish & even more knowing I have him safe. Glad the netting does its job with light & the fish. Glad I decided to ask for alternatives.

Just got the window frame from HD. I had to cut twice, didn't account for the adapters size lol. Frame is now made, i have to make 2 more for the sides of my HOB filter.

All I need now is the netting and I'm set.
I appreciate everyones help. Thanks...

Hello everyone.. I just received the clear netting from BRS, farm was made so I went to work on the netting. Smooth and simple, nice tight fit. Here are some pictures of the finished work.

I appreciate everyones response and help. Im happy with the results and knowing my BDJF won't jump out gives me peace of mind...

Wow, you did a great job!

Just watch that side where you left it open for the cord....

Those look great. I think you'll probably be ok, but I've certainly had fish find smaller holes, so you may want to put a small piece of screen material there just to keep the evil spirits at bay.

Thank you, I appreciate it. Im going to super glue some egg crate tabs on the ends, just in case.

Thanks, he seems to love his cave so I dont expect him to jump, but like you said, evil is always lurking. Im going to glue some tabs or netting on the ends..
