Screw in bulbs

I read few posts here where they mention that for 10G size, petco and petsmarts have screw in incandescent hoods where you can screw coralife 10W or 20W 10K/Actinic pc bulbs.
Has anybody tried that? What were results? Does these light setup create any algae issues? Can you grow softy and low light LPS with this lights? Are there any powerful screw-in pc bulbs that can go in this fixture? Would you recommend this setup if you have used it? Any feedback or pics will help as well.

Here is the link to the 20W bulbs:

I've used the 10w over a small refugium and they're OK. More blue than the daylight curly bulbs from HD and not that much more money. The 20w is a long bulb , a little over 9" as I recall.

I don't think they'd be cost effective for a 10 gallon tank though. you can buy a Coralife 96w powerquad fixture for under $100 and it's plug and play.

Thanks for reply. I am still researching and haven't decided exactly what i want. Here is another picture of the 20W bulb. Anybody else has any experience with these lights? If so any feedback :)

i have those on my freshwater puffer tank....there is someone on the forum here succesfully keeping softies in a 10 gal under two of these in a petco style incandescent hood

One of my freinds puts 2 of the 20w bulbs in a hood over 10g's. They look nice, but he's had alot of problems with them not working.

ive been using 2 of them on my 10 for about 5 months now with great results, been keeping softies, shrooms and lps with no problems

i've used the 20 watt bulb over a 12 gal tank, and they worked ok, they r a decent cheap option

Found 20 watt LOA self ballast screw in bulbs at Walmart. they are 6500K and were two for like $8.00 I am going to try it out in my 10G setup and will let you know.

thanks lemmz for posting....it was ur tank i was trying to find a link to for 5this thread....post a pic so these guys can see

the screw-ins are great, i use two 10 watt 50/50s over my 5 gallon, so two 20 watts should work just fine.

im familiar the 10 gallon hood, if im not mistaken youll need some kind of glass or acrylic to protect the bulbs from the water

good luck, id like to see pics when your done!

I bought topfin 10g kit. The hood that comes with this kit does have glass to protect bulbs.

I just tried new bulbs. They are very white and not yellow at all. They are two 20 watts bulbs and seem to producing lot of light. These are from Lights of America and i found them at walmart. I think for 10g, this will give enough lights for softy and lps. So far i have no corals but i will update the this thread regularly.

How come they make the screw in 50/50, but not a screw in Full actinic?

Give it sometime, i am sure whey will come up with it.:)

well i am running 2 10w coralife 50/50 with a cascade 80 hob filter and a cheapo no name powerhead for additional flow and as for fish its just the one bluefin damsel and a few nassarius snails, astria snails and blue and red leg hermits
