Scud living in your display tank?

Hello everyone, new kid on the block here:wavehand: ... are any of you running a deep sand bed and scuds are living and breeding in the tank (with other predatory fish)? How long did it take you to establish a colony?
Thanks!

Are you talking about amphipods? In that case a deep sandbed wont do any difference. They primarily reside within the rockwork and it's almost impossible to eradicate them, once they are established. On that note however it still takes close to a year, before the population can sustain a single mandarin fish. Also you wont reach that sized population without feeding your other tank inhabitants.
It goes like this: You feed your non-predatory fish -> leftover food gets eaten by scuds, pods, etc -> their populations increase to a sustainable high number -> you can now have a single predatory fish living completely off of the pods, as long as you keep feeding the other fish.

Amphipods just kinda happen. Never heard of a tank without em, but they're not really something you can directly easily breed, they hold their own population dependant on the food supply (left overs) of the other livestock.

Can be done in dedicated systems, but if you're hoping to breed an army of them on purpose in an adverage tank, just be aware they'll be the ones deciding their limits on how large of a colony they can have.
