Just dropped in my first cucumber. It is secreting something that looks like smoke in the water. Just wondering what this is and if it is harmful to my tank? Any help is appreciated.

There are some color variations within the species, so most likely it is Pentacta Anceps. If you have still not removed it you really should do so as soon as possible just to be safe.

Look for any fish that seem to be acting differently or corals closing up, the toxins will burn a lot of corals if it has indeed eviscerated. If you see anything out of the ordinary begin large water changes immediately.

Thanks for the help. I see your from knoxville, I'll be down there next weekend for the football game. Are there any good fish stores you could recommend for me to visit while I'm down there?

would all of you people with little experience not chime in on topics that you know nothing about, the cucumber is fine just leave it alone, it will expel it's guts when unhappy and even that is fine.

if it still looks like it does in the picture it's perfectly healthy, it may have just took a poop...

Obviously me, seeing as how I'm the only one that posted besides the OP.

You make this assertion based on what? Did I ever give so much as a hint that I knew "nothing" about sea cucumbers? I gave my input based on first-hand eviscerating experience, AND backed it up with reputable sources...

I have since learned to properly feed them with a quality Phyto both target and dosing the tank, he is since very happy.

The toxins are KNOWN to do harm, harm is not fine.

That is one possibility, but why take a risk on something that is SO easy to do, there is nothing wrong with putting him in a QT where he can be properly target fed and monitored without risk of polluting the tank (food OR toxins) until the OP can get a handle on the nature of the Cuke.

i have over 10 cucumbers in my multi-tank connected system and have never had any problems in the slightest. i have both sand sifting and filter feeding cucumbers and have never lost any of them or noticed them distressed at all.

i would never QT a cucumber, it's most likely you QT tank does not have sufficient nutrients in the water column or in the substrate to substain them. also once filter feeding cucumbers attach to something you really can't remove them, and they rarely move.
