Sea Hare

They're generally considered reef safe. I've heard that some species have the ability to produce 'ink' as a defense mechanism, but I have never personally seen this. I've had 2 sea hares and they were both model citizens. I gave both away after my algae problems went away. They'll usually eat macro algae and marine plants also, just so ya know. My fish never bothered either sea hare, I believe sea hares are toxic to fish, and the fish somehow seem to know this.

Tons of info here: The Sea Slug Forum

Yup they are toxic! I just had one die, and it took out most of my tank with it! I love how the lps told me about this.... I don't recomend it! Get a goby it's much safer. Cool too! (my opinion!)

They can be toxic, but they generally do not pose a threat unless threatened. If you have agressive fish then probably not a good idea, but if you think your fish will let it be, then go for it.

My experience with sea hares was a good one. I had one of these guys...

in my tank for about 6 months (in case the link doesn't work, it's a Dolabella auricularia - or a Bali Sea Hair). He never bothered anyone, ate constantly, and was actually one of the most interesting and interactive creatures I've ever had (and as strange as this sounds, cute too!). Then again, he was quartered with very peaceful tankmates: Pseudochromis fridmani (orchid dottyback), Gobiosoma oceanops (blue neon goby), Cryptocentrus cinctus (yellow watchman goby), so I can't say how he'd react to bullies.

One thing I CAN say is that (due to my own negligence - always always wash your hands and wear gloves before reaching into a tank - always!), I accidentally killed the sea hare (and about 1/2 my inverts) due to introducing chemicals on my hands. He held out for about a week, but he finally died overnight and was in the tank for about 7 hours before I found his body. He never polluted the tank via inking, even when / after he died.

Just my own experiences, but they were good ones.

When you go to your LFS try to pick one that is about 3 to 4''. The problem with the seahare is that they eat all the time and as they reach a maximum size they died.
