im impress with the sea swirl product and convince to buy it but have a few question. I am planning on getting a 125g with the built in overflow. it will be mix reef but mostly sps tank.
1. what model sea swirl and how many do i need to have for full coverage?
2. can i use the sea swirl to replace for the return or it best use the return lock line and sea swirl at the same time?
3. is it worth replacing powerhead with this product?
 
I have a 3/4" sea swirl on my 180. I believe the most I can get out of it is 800 GPH. I tee'd off my return, which starts out @ 1-1/2", having one go to the saw swirl and the other to my returns.

I have a reeflo dart hybrid and that one pump feeds my return, sea swirl, carbon reactor, calcium reactor, & bio pellet reactor. With that being said, my valve for the return is open all the way while the valve to the sea swirl is opened approx 80%. Whether I open the sea swirl valve 80% or all the way, I get the same output so I chose to only open it 80% hoping to divert more pressure and flow to my returns.

I believe that the main function of the return is to transport water back up to the display tank. It is the powerhead's job to move the water in the display. If you get a lot of water movement from your returns, more power to ya, but I think that you shouldn't reley soley on it.
 
I also have a 3/4 on my 125 with a Mag 9 running also thru the chiller. I placed it in the middle of the tank and i really works great and reaches well the corners of the tank.

Are you restricting the flow through your chiller? I'm thinking that you need to put a ball valve in front of your chiller to get more contact time. I think that if you run the water straight through without slowing it down, you might not get enough contact time to adequately cool it down. I could be wrong though.
 
You are correct. There is a gate valve and it is aroung 60% closed. All the other pressure is going to the Sea Swirl....
 
i might get the 3/4 model n set it in the middle of the tank n have the it pump from the sump while the return line will be on their own pump maybe wit less flow. don't know if it a good idea to have so much flow and also is it true that the sea swirl can change the flow from min. flow to max flow?
 
Only way to control the flow on a sea swirl is to put a ball valve on it. Sea Swirl has a new model that you can change fro a 1/2 to a 1'' I believe.
