I am curious about these guys, but I don't want one chowing down on my coraline algae. Is there a subsitute food that I can give one if I get one so that it doesn't kill all the purple goodness??
Hmm... well I think they will just eat whatever the hell they want - I know they will eat a lot of different types of algae. I have one living in my sump, and there is no coraline in there.
I'm not aware of anything that they will eat instead of coraline.
The one I have in my tank (a blue tuxedo urchin) definately eats coraline (as well as all other kinds of algae) but it is an extremely slow mover and the coraline in my aquarium seems to be able to outgrow the rate at which the sea urchin eats it.
That was also the case in my tank. I had a pincushion urchin in mine and the coraline was able to out grow the rate at which he ate, and I only have about 24 lbs LR
I have a small longspined urchin(golf ball size) in a 15gal and there's enough corraline to support him, plus I have to clean the glass everyweek or two.
Cheers
