Seachem Matrix in Sump

Hi, Is it effective to put Seachem Matrix in a bucket with lots of holes to allow water to flow? I don't have a chamber in my sump to put this. As I understand it, I can dump this straight in, but i thought if I used a bucket, it would make it easy to pull out quickly if needed.

I don't see a problem with this. If you have room for a bucket go for it. My skimmer is in a bucket LOL.

Matrix is like rubble, but with more surface area.
I would suspect if you put it in a bucket, depending upon the holes, it would probably work very well for amm-nitrite-nitrate, and may (again depending upon the hole/flow configuration) create a nice denitrifying zone.

I've used Matrix multiple times, always remember though to rinse it every few months with the water you're taking out of the tank to rinse it well but not kill stuff.

Go get yourself a pond plant basket, works perfect for the bigger pieces (matrix is like the size of a pencil eraser or a dime? A pond basket is effectively a kitchen strainer, in fact, a plastic kitchen strainer might be perfect.

Nice thing about sumps, you can do a lot with them.

Otherwise, you can use a media bag just fine. Do not "pack" the media bag tight, you want flow. If you need more use more bags. I lay my charcoal bag on eggcrate in the sump, it had excellent flow. It is laid out horizontally, and loosely packed in the bag.

The better way, is a reactor.

You could always use a plastic mesh bag. I have 3 bags (size of my fist) in my sump. that way I can easily remove it, to do some maintenance in the chambers.
