Just baking it may force the bonds to break on it, but the package/directions that come with purigen state to bleach, rinse thorougly in RO/DI, and then soak in a buffer solution for a day. It's expensive stuff to use in place of carbon if you're not going to regenerate it. $10 for a small 1 or 2 oz baggie, so trying to use it in place of a skimmer to save money wouldn't be effective either.
But all that said... if you're having trouble getting your water visibly clear and carbon isn't doing the job for some reason, it works wonders and in a hurry. I've used it in a freshwater tank that had just finished its cycle and water changes and carbon weren't doing the job. 1 bag of purigen thrown in my HOB power filter had it clear within a couple days.
Basically, I wouldn't recommend it long term without looking at other options first. Once those options have failed, I'd suggest trying it as a one time quick fix type thing.
Their packaging description states it bonds to and holds either 500 or 500% its weight of the organic nasties we want rid of. 500% makes more sense. I can look to see if I still have the box later if anyone would like.
