Trying out a new salt today for a wc. Like always I normally do a test on the first batch.

SG 1.025
Ph 8.2
Temp 78
Alk 8.6 DKH
Ca 470
Mag 1120 (a little weak IMO)
PO4 0

Salifert was used to test Ca, Alk, Mg and PO4.
Just info I wanted to pass on.

The only thing I dont like about it is it mixes a bit cloudy.
Damit, that's what I'm trying to get away from. I sure wish Kent would fix their's, I liked that stuff.

Has anyone tested the Seachem for silicate? I tried TM and TMpro, but the elevated silacate levels have turned my whole tank brown with diatoms. I used to use Kent, but after the alkalinity problem - I haven't bought it since. I'm tempted to try Reef Crystals or Sea Chem.

Well, after some searching, they say if you aerate the mix, it will mix up clear. I normally just throw in a powerhead and let it mix overnight. Next week Ill attach a venturi to the pump and see.

I used a powerhead with air line in it i for got it was on the pump the powerhead is one that stayes in my mixing vatt i dont even rember why i put the airline on the pump. but i know that it worked and i did not even think about it untill you posted that you was going to aerate it next time

When I mix salt I like to have it clear and mixed and in the tank within 15 minutes, that's interesting you are getting a cloudy mix Russ.
Now Scott on the other hand isn't. Scott do you let it mix all day?

No, I fill the barrel with water, slowly add the salt, and presto changeo, I use it. Perhaps it is the amount of flow and agitation I use, 1400 GPH with the two mag 7’s.

I have noticed some cloudy mixing. I usually mix up 30 gal at a time and have a 360gph (just guessign its been a while since I looked at the specs on it) power head stiring it. Even 24 hours later sometimes its cloudy. I may try tossing the other 360 power head in and see if its better.

I also get some chalky percipitate on the sides of the bucket and on the heater and PH them selves. Whats up with that. I always put the water into the bucket then add the salt. Could I be adding the salt to fast? I usually just dump in 15 cups and check it the next day. And I guess i ought to add its a covered bucket, I want to limit the amount of dog fur in the mix.

Im not sure why mine mixes cloudy. I wonder if the Ph of my RO/DI water has something to do with it. Mine is around 9-10. Ill aerate this weekends WC and maybe toss in another pump.

Well I cant get this salt to mix clear. 24 hours of mixing and aerating didnt help. I dont think its a bad salt mix, but I wish it would clear up for me.

The good news is Scott is getting Tropic Marin in very soon now, hopefully within a week?
We discussed pricing and it seems the Tropic Marin will be only about 5¢ a gallon more than the Seachem, and he might bring in some 300 gallon bag mix of the TM and that will actually be the same or perhaps cheaper than the seachem!!!
I know I mix my TM and literally as soon as I get the salinity right (within 10 minutes of adding the salt) I push it in the tank, no cloudyness whatsoever.
Anyway just thought I'd throw that out there.

Good news on the TM but I just bought an 8 mo supply of Seachem. Its ok though. It does clear up in the tank.
