Seagel vs. Renew ?

I'm looking for something to clean my water, like carbon, but not leech phosphates into my water like carbon.

Seachem has a product called "Seagel" that is carbon mixed with a phosphate remover. I bought some.

But then I saw a product by Seachem called "Renew" that made pretty much the same claims, but claimed not to be "harsh"

So what is the difference? Should I have bought the "Renew"?

If you have used both of these let me know.

and yes john37, using carbon will add phosphates to your system.

I have always avoided carbon and recently decided to try it for the first time. Now three weeks later I am plagued by Cyano bacteria algae.

This is what I do with the carbon, it is a PITA but seems to help

1. Put the carbon in large mesh bag
2. Rinse carbon several times with RO/DI to wash off the dust
3. Soaks in RO/DI water overnight on a bucket
4. Change the RO/DI water a few days later, or whenever I remember. This can go for weeks since I don't change carbon that often.
Then when I need carbon, I just get some from this bucket. It still has PO4, but not as much. The PO4 detected in the carbon was about 0.14 ppm after rinsing / soaking for several days. It tested as high as 0.60 ppm in initial rinsing.

As you have suggested, rinsing in RO/DI is the best way to go. I always rins emy carbon in tap water, and I realized today that this habit isn't the best.
