Sorry ,, Been takin out my game need to move this thing to a more productive Forum .. the Cleveland Classsifieds just dont make a productive build thread Host

Hi Marc! I think what he is getting at is that there have been lots and lots of selling threads in the local club forums. There has also been a lot of trading going on at the meetings. Since our club covers such a broad area and the Zoo is a central meeting place it seems like people are waiting to get things from others until the meeting dates and we have been watching it increase drastically in the last 5-6 months.
IMO It isn't a big deal if the people come in at 7:15 and get their trades done before the meeting starts at 7:30 but it spills over into the meeting sometimes.
I am glad to see the club growing by leaps and bounds and this is just a trend of the newer members finding other people with things they want. I think as the newer members all trade the items they HAVE to have they will be a little more interested in learning about the hobby, maintaining what they have and less interested in breaking off a chunk to make a buck whenever possible.

It seems like we went from a group of guys who would do anything for someone in need and always have free frags for newbies to a group of people trying to pay for their hobby through club forums and meetings. As with everything, it should come and go and hopefully after our frag swap next weekend the major selling will die down a bit. It doesn't help that people are losing their jobs and now trying to make ends meet more than ever by selling what they already have.

Yeah, that's a problem that every club seems to be encountering. The fact that people say "You can make this tank pay for itself by selling frags" is not only misleading, but also puts a negative feel to what was originally a hobby.

I've sold a few things out of my tanks over the years, but the majority has been free or $5 frags. I've paid much more for frags I wanted, but I refuse to get sucked into that mentality that I often see now.

The fact is, the more hobbyists that get away with selling stuff at a higher price, the more they drive up the prices in this hobby. It used to be possible to get a nice colony from the LFS for $40 to $60. Since frags are sold at $40 each, colonies are selling at $80-90 now, and the prettier stuff garners hundreds of dollars now. The hobbyists have made the market what it is now, and complain about the costs at the stores.

you hit the nail right on the head Marc !!! thats exactly how i am feeling ... trying to find my inner reef geek ...let it emerge again....

New to the club/hobby and have had the pleasure of experiencing what Melev is talking about.People like theBudman,cash03in,milkman78,Bruno,Tonycip,djtonton, Jim Morrison have taken the time to show off their tanks offer some advice and sell/give a few frags to help start our tank with something other than expensive rocks.

Sean,
Thanks for showing us your tanks they are even more impressive up close.Never thought about putting a moray our a reef tank but last night after lights out the new snowflake was swimming laps around the tank knocking frags over.

Dude... I almost followed suit today and dropped an eel in my reef. The LFS had a sweet little white ribbon eel in stock today. If I wasn't rimless, and my livestock wasn't so small... it would have came home with me.

:(

Looks like i might be starting a trend in reefkeeping ....lol I think I might have scored a 6 bulb tek fixture for my 70 gal tank ...let the fun begin ..
