Couldnt really get to many good ones, was really crowded today but here are some of their reef tank, its pretty amazing in person. Not sure when they put it in but wasnt in atlantis 2 years ago. To me it looks like they prolly have 1000watt 20k's maybe mixed with natrual sunlight or 10k's, but was pretty blue. Might get a private tour next time to see their equipment.

No DSB? :p

The bottom of the tank was below the wall but you can still see the bottom, from what I could tell there was sand but deff not dsb.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the good words on the aquarium. Here are some stats:

Lighting: 2X1000 watt. 14k Hamilton, 2X400 watt. 14k Hamilton, and 8X96 watt. actinic powercompact.
The sand bed is about 4 inches deep on average.
ETSS skimmer
2 Large Korrallin calcium reactors.

what are the dimensions of the tank justinzimm? height, length, etc. Do you have any pics of the sump, skimmer, lights above the tank . . . Circulation, what are you using?

Thank you.

Here are a few pictures of the seaworld here in San Antonio. I wasnt too thrilled about the reef tanks..ive seen better stuff at LFS..so i took pics of the fake reef, lol..

It's really hard to say exact dimentions because the back wall is a semicircle and the front glass has an "S" curve to it (acrylic). It averages about 8 feet long and 5 feet wide and 4.5 feet deep. I'm currently at my home in Pennsylavaia and don't have any pictures with me. For cirulation we are using 2 - 3/4 hp. jacuzzi stingray pool pumps on a closed loop. Water returns from the sump with 2 Iwaki 100RLTs. All of our MH lights (ballast and reflectors) are from Sunlight supply and the PC are from PFO lighting. We use both Ca reactors and kalk for keeping up our numbers.

The aquarium has been set up for almost 3 years now. The first year was rough with a small fire, red bugs and a timer malfuntion that left the 1000W MH lights stuck in the "on" position for almost a week! Most of the growh you see has been in the last year since all the problems were worked out. Lately it's been smooth sailing. :)

Thanks Justinzimm! Sounds very nice but how could you have 1000W MH's on for a week without anyone noticing!!!
What are the pillars with the corals groing on them on the left side of the pictures?

awsome lol someone that knows something about this tank, do you maintain this tank?

One thing I was wondering is how do you get down in there? looks like you would have to hang from something

All of our lighting timers were run by our theatrical dept. One day I came in and noticed the lights were still on overnight. Called theatrical and was told they fixed the problem and wouldn't happen again. We'll next day same thing, made call, problem fixed. Next day again same problem, etc. etc. We'll needless to say we now have our own timers and control when the lights come on and off. Had a few corals bleach outright. Most just lightened up and growth almost stopped until they regained color.

The aquarium is supposed to be themed or set up like "atlantis" ruin. The pilliars are made of plastic and there are stone scrolls and tablets that are mostly hidden by coral growth (thank god).

do you maintain this tank?

Yes, there are a few of us who are responsible for the Journey To Atlantis aqariums. However, I'm the area "lead" and also the coral nerd.

We use a pole with a special scrub pad on the end for day to day cleaning. Once or twice a month I have to snorkel the tank to clean coralline algae off the glass and fix frags that break or move. Just crawl in from the side and stand on the sand. (have to move the clams first)

When I went about 8 years back, the reef exhibit was pathetic.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The one thing I learned from working for a public aquarium is with all the turnover, area moves and transfers it's really hard to give reef tanks the stability they need. Or they try to rush things. Not so much the falt of the aquarist but more the system that fails.
