Sebea anemone

Hello all. Today I added this anemone to my tank. The tank has been running for about 7 months and the parameters have been staying pretty constant so I took a gamble with this one. I am still new to anything but the fish so I just wanted an opinion on if the way this sebea took place is ok and if there is anything else I should do.

. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried feeding it anything yet? (live black worms, live brine, mysis shrimp, etc)

Not much else to do. It may move around the tank looking for the ideal light and or flow. It will live where it is the happiest. It may not eat for a few days until it establishes itself though, so dont be too worried about it.

Have not tried feeding yet it is still in the same spot. I am hoping my lighting is gonna be sufficient as I am trying an led system it seems to be doing alright hasn't moved and mouth hasn't opened up still spread out like it has been and isn't stretching for light or anything. I know it is still early but I haven't seen any sign of my ocellaris clown wanting anything to do with it.

That is a very bleached H. crispa anemone (sebae is the common name for both crispas and malus). Other than being bleached it looks pretty good. What kind of lighting do you have it under?

After it has settled in for a couple of days you should try offering it a small (pencil eraser size) piece of fresh seafood (shrimp, scallop, etc). If it takes the food and ingests it, try offering another piece 2-3 days later. This will help it keep up its energy while it regains its zooanthellae.

My biggest concern is the lighting. I bought the aqueon 48 inch led fixture with little reviews for saltwater. It had a few good reviews for freshwater with live plants and people said it was actually doing really well with their plants. Anyways it has individual sealed strips for leds. I have two daylight white and one max blue strip and it seems to be a good amount of light getting to the bottom although I do not know the parameters levels.

Sorry, but that light is not nearly strong enough for an anemone. You might be able to support some softies or leathers but is about it without stronger lighting. That light is definitely not meant for a reef tank.

Agreed. I had an aqueon light at first and it was horrible. Ever grow LEDs and reef breeders are good if you are on a budget. If not, Radions and AI Sol are great lights.

It definitely isn't planned to be my main lighting but more of a budget stepping stone while I save money to buy a quad t5ho system. My tank BTW is a standard 90 gallon. Although I do like leds I know t5ho is the way to go. I'm hoping within 6 to 9 months I will be able to get an upgraded light

Won't that anemone move towards the light before it perishes though? The fact that it can move makes me think that they do have a mind to them. Just thinking out loud...

GL. :)

It didn't move and looks very healthy but I have been alternating my 30 inch t5 ho with dual 10k bulbs between my 90 he planted tank and my saltwater above the anemone every other day anyways.

With respect on your financial issues - like the above states the anemone will die if additional lighting is not provided. Best to bring it back to lfs till your able to get better lights.
These are majestic long living animals that need care.
take things slow don't buy something you can't afford to keep alive (sorry if it sounds preachy)
nothing worse than watching a creature die.

Like I said I am running t5 ho on it every other day and even before that it has done well I have seen it take some of the food I have put into the tank and my clown fish is slowly working it's was to it and spending more time with it. The lfs had it under regular t5s with a large amount of red slime in the tank. I don't see how that would be doing it any favors when my water quality is immaculate compared. the leds alone were compare able to the no ho lighting it was under let alone every other day with t5ho in my tank.

Your sabae should look like these:

Your's is transperant and bleached, and running the lights on every other day is actually not helping at all.. that's like expecting a wilting flower to suddenly bloom in a room with windows shut tight except when you're in it for a couple minutes or hours of the day..

You're going to want to buy your lighting based on the spectrum the light is at.. giving off a good ammount of PAR for the animal. Even if it's getting only one system atleast get a reef breeder LED system on that side of the tank..

You're trying to replicate the ocean, and the sun.. not only is it nearly impossible for us to achieve copying those in general.. but what you're doing isn't even close to it's survival needs like we get.

Also if the clownfish is tank bred (which it is) it's odds of going in a rock or coral are better than an anemone.

May I add to concern you more that if you do not have a decent ammount of carbon.. a large animal like an anemone dying will melt and could potentally whipe out your whole system? Your system is still new and will not take a shock like a melting anemone well..

If I were you I'd just avoid anything photosynthetic at all if you can't afford it. Stay simple and if you are prepared then give it a go.

Well I'm in the process of building a four light t5ho canopy right now just started it about 4 days ago I need suggestions on good reflectors while on the discussion of the lighting maybe one of you guys will have some suggestions I already have the ballast and I am going to get the ends for the bulbs this weekend I am thinking about 2 to 3 weeks it will be up and running.

The anemone I'd be utterly shocked if it live the first week.. You do not realize how touchy anemones are.. I mean seriously you have a VERY difficult animal that not only you purchased in terrible condition, but can't provide it it's requirements. It be in your best interest to rehome this specimen, and get another anemone in about a year or so.. yeah anemones need a really established tank before even purchasing introducing.

I don't know how my post sounds being read but I'm not trying to be harsh just provide some advice which probably others may not aggree with.

Small nitpick but this thread belongs here: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=36

Two weeks today looking the same a little more comfortable It has not moved. It has ate some food and is underneath t5ho for 10 hours a day now. Water params are still good although my salinity is a little low. 1.022 I have since been slowly raising it.
