got my second package in the same day actually, came home, was surprised I had to drip drop and add water every 15 minutes for two hours(stayed up to 3ish)...Everything looks fine, Richard gave me a pretty big anemone for free! :-)...I acclimated him too, and put him gently on a rock in the front, but the retard moved behind the tank (between rock and glass) and finally he is moving again, he's a lot faster than I thought! What kind of anemone is he?please take a look, also I got 1 peppermint shrimp, he is MIA! I have no clue where he is (do they hide?)...but he did not get sucked up...and I ran into a lot of little crabs with 4 small legs, they were tan in color and hand pinchers...I also ran into a reddish crab with black eyes, 4 legs, with pinchers, he was pretty friendly...(i know those are crappy descriptions, but maybe someone could tell me what they were?)my mom is such a "save this, save that" freak, that I ended up putting some crabs in my sump...until I can figure out if they are good or bad...my tiger tails(big fat black things right?) are just lazy or something....anyways, time for some pics

this is similar in color to my rose coral, but it appears to be harder, it also glows, what is it

the very last picture is where the anemone is currently...I don't like him being in the back of the tank, I wanna show him off! How can I make him sorta stay in the front?and plus, when i get clowns, they will always be back there with him :-(.....

The anemone is probably a Condy (Condylactis gigantea). Lots of TBS customers seem to get them. I don't believe that clowns will host with this particular anemone, though. It will move around until it is happy. If it continually moves without settling in, that's not a good sign. They'll also hide in/behind rocks if they are sick or stressed. Yours may still be stressed out from shipping. If you decide to try and move it, it would be better to move the entire rock that it's attached to, rather than try to actually remove it from its rock.

For what it's worth, mine didn't make it. It died about 5 days after my second shipment was added. I imagine the shipping stress and the cycling tank were simply too much for an anemone, which really requires a pretty stable tank. I hope you have better luck with yours.

I'm also curious what that brown dome-like thing is as I received a couple of those as well.

was your anemone a hitchhiker or a gift???he sent this one in the same box as the critters in it's own bag...I sure hope it will host with a clown...and I hope it'll make it

when should I start to feed the anemone???what kinda foods do you feed live rock and eventually fish?I've heard that DT's is good, but what else should I buy for live rock and fish?I'm total noob

Mine arrived as a "gift" in its own bag. I would feed mine a chunk of raw shrimp about the size of its mouth. I would deposit the shrimp near the anemone using a turkey baster. It would then grab the shrimp and down it'd go. Pretty neat, really.

Of course, mine died so maybe I'm not the guy to ask.

As far as hosting with a clownfish, if it's a Condy it probably won't happen. See here: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?siteid=23&pCatId=619

daaang...that sucks...i wonder why they ship them to us...why would TBS give us anemones when we are establishing our aquariums,(i read once, to wait 6 months at least before getting one)...Man, I really wanted it to host...ugh...but I do still appreciate it...

Anemone is the Condylactis anemone, a very hardy Atlantic anemone. The first picture is just a bigger version of the Caribbean rose coral that you already have. The dome thing is Siderastrea radians (aka lesser starlet coral). The black ball thing is, I believe, a chicken liver sponge. The soft thing is a sponge or tunicate of some sort. The red thing is a sponge.

Give the anemone a week to settle down, he may then move someplace where the flow and lights are more to his liking. Then, you can try a pea-size piece of raw shrimp or fish deposited at the tip of his tentacles, and watch him feed.

The condy is not a natural host for any clownfish, but there's one clown (I think tomato, but don't quote me) which may adopt the condy. The condy is a good beginner anemone, pretty forgiving of lighting, flow, etc., as is the Epicystis (rockflower) anemone.

Hey, I didn't mean to get you discouraged about the Condy. Just because mine didn't make it doesn't mean that you won't have better luck. I believe that I've seen posts here from folks whose Condys made it just fine. Maybe yours will thrive. I'm still a beginner myself, so I don't have many of the answers.

As far as hosting a clown, I intend to look into a BTA down the road. My tank is still new as well, about 10 weeks, so it'll be at least four more months before I even consider it. I'm not sure if BTA's and Condys can co-exist in the same tank. Not a problem for me, of course, but you may wish to investigate it at some point.

Regarding the condy

Regarding the condy

My condi is doing all right in spite of me (It has been in since April 12th). It actually moved up to and got partially digested by a powerhead. It took a real beating, and I was sick, but it has regrown all of its arms and has settled down, happily in the front of my tank, and at a good distance from the powerhead, now covered with a sponge filter to prevent further disasters.

Every few days I feed it a small piece of fish.

It hasn't moved significantly for two weeks now. It seems happy.

Mine has move so many times it is getting old. He even got himself lodged innto an area in a ball so tight I had to go in and resue it. Seems better now. I do not think I could kill this thing. Have moved him myself with no problem. He also eats raw shimp and loves it.

my condy has moved again, he is on top of a rock, below the powerhead, water movement looks good...the rock that he is on, has a big 50 cent piece hole in it, and he has his foot in it, and his body is stretched all the way to the top of the rock...I think he is happy, but I'll know tomorrow, he seems to move late in the night...is it okay if I try to feed him normal shrimp?like from the grocery store?

and I want to get some frogspawn and richordia soon, should i just put those on the opposite side of the tank???

my peppermint shrimp is still MIA (i guess he's hiding) will he ever start to come out?

That's great to hear that it pulled through. I came home today to find that mine had tried to go into the overflow box but got caught up in the teeth. His foot was still outside attached to the glass in the main tank, with most of his tentacles pulled inside the box by the water flow. Might have been that way all day, I don't know. He was ok when I left this morning.

I was able to turn off the pump and get him detached with no problem and he seems to be in tact, but I can't tell if he's alive or not. I just set him down on the sand and hopefully he'll recover.

Will it be obvious if he's dead?

No doubt!

It is real hard to kill a condy......if one dies, it will turn to a pile of white snot, otherwise they are ok. Many people mistake thier up and down lifestyle and throw away live condys......believe me, you will know if it is dead, otherwise, leave them alone, they are fine..

Thanks

Here is a picture of mine taken a few hours before I removed him. His mouth was first gaping, then completely inverted. It later seemed as if he was actually coming apart, and he lost grip on the rock and tumbled across the tank. I was pretty fortunate to be able to grab him before he slipped into the rocks. So yeah, it was pretty obvious that he was a goner. Too bad, but as I said, that doesn't mean that Noobie's won't do well. In fact, if his Condy does even half as well as my Gorilla crabs, he'll be in heaven. (Any fresh ideas for capturing those buggers?)

I bought a condy with my rock shipment to see how he would fair in my tank. He has survived over two months now and seems to be fairly hardy considering I've moved him to a smaller tank of his own. He gets a pea sized amount of shrimp every other day. Mine tends to pull all his arms in at night and comes out as soon as I turn the lights on. Let him wander until he finds a good spot and then he'll stay put. Also, I've had anemones die before, they pull into the base like a lump and get very hard. Good luck!

He was expelling food, they do that, he was ok.....condys do weird things, but if they die, will turn into a pile of white snot, unmistakable. When they eat they will expell what they do not want by opening mouth and spitting out that white gunk in the middle of yoyr picture...

Thanks

so i should wait a week and then feed my condy a pea sized amount? my condy has found a crevice, the size of a 50 cent piece, to put his foot in, and he is stretched to the top of the rock, so all his tenticles can hit the light, it's pretty cool looking, i think he's happy, he hasn't moved!

if i get ricordia and frogspawn and put them on the opposite side of my 55, will everything behave?

Thanks guys. Mine is looking great this morning -- he's recovered from his trip to the falls and picked a perfect spot down on the sand where he really grabs some attention.

Over on the left side...
