Securing rocks together?

I want to do a rockwork like the 'bonsai tree' rockwork that was on here a while ago but I'm not too sure how to build the structure to put the rock on. Would you use acrylic rods or zip tie rocks to pvc? How do you drill the hole in the rock in such a way that the zip tie is hidden? Or if you have another method besides just stacking them in a structural manner please post it here.

Acrylic Rods. Really nice to be first and view the results as an overwhelming bar in my favor.

Thanks for the input. I forgot to ask. What size rod or pvc would you use?

i used all three, plus aquamend and marine glue. depends on the size rock and support needed, imo

NONE. do i really need to attach them to eachother? as long as they stack up stable then why do i need to.

I don't think it is possible to obtain that structure with just stacking them. In the past I have always stacked them like you mention but I am going for a different look.
