Seeking Help for Tank Move to Bay Area

Hi Bay Area Reefers,

I am a reefer from Souther California (member of SCMAS) that needs help moving my tank up to the bay area. I am hoping somebody with a frag system or a newly cycled tank would be willing to help me out. I am relocating up to the bay area for work and wil be driving up this Friday, w/ the rest of my things arriving later that month.

I am hoping that somebody would be willing to "reefsit" my livestock and corals of my 40g tank for 2-4 weeks while I find a new place to live and get my tank going again.

My livestock includes the following:

1 6 Line Wrasse
1 Hi Fin Red Banded Goby & Pistol Shrimp
1 Royal Gramma
2 Ocellaris Clowns
1 Lawnmower Blenny

I have a mix of lps and sps corals (mostly montiporas and micromussas/acanastrea).

Please contact me if you are able to help! Thanks!

Matt

yah, need to know where you're settling. You might not be able to leave them all at one location, perhaps you have to split them up.

Hi guys,

I am moving up to the Mountain View area to start a new job.

Alternatively, I might set up a temporary 20g tank just to hold things for a while. Would anyone have a metal halide unit I could borrow for 2-4 weeks?

Would a larger rubbermaid tub work better? I might be able to put my T5 lights over that.

Thanks for the help. I'm trying to evaluate my options to reduce stress on my fish and corals during the transition.

If you decide to setup a holding tank, I think it's best if you use it for your fishes only. Catching them out of someone's display can be a PITA.

Fish don't require lights, just food and a small power head can probably hold them for a couple weeks.

Let someone hold on to your corals for the time being.

I'm still trying to convince my wife to let me fly down and rent a utility van to haul everything up in one day. Is that a better plan?

Hey guys, going to fly back to Irvine this weekend so I can drive my tank up on Monday. I really need to get some RO water on hand before the move. Can anyone recommend a good LFS around Mountain View?

As a secondary note, should I only take the top few inches of sand? If I take everything will it cause a bad cycle/release of gas?

Thanks!
Matt

There is a place on Castro I think, Aquascapes or something like that. Been there once a few years back, but I think its still there.

Well if the tank isn't full of water you can take all the sand... I'd just give it a good rinsing if it has a lot of crud in it.

I am in Palo Alto and can take care of the fish for you. Can take care of some coral as well. No Guarantees on survival from me, but I have been doing this for a while and should be able to help you out.

I can also let you borrow a MH. 175 or 250. Would prefer to lend out the 175.

How much RO do you need? I can probably help you out with some. Don't go to Aquascene. They blow. Natural Life is in Sunnyvale, just down the way, much better. Shoot me a PM and I will give you my #. Help you any way I can.

Thanks for the offers to help. I might need to take you up on the RO water offer Qwiv! I'm going to try taking down the tank, driving up the state, and setting it up again the same day! Hopefully everything goes according to plan.

I was going to get some cheap styrofoam coolers (the kind at your local drugstore) and placing my live rocks/corals in there. Anyone know if these are safe to put things in directly? Should I put things in plastic containers first?

Thanks!
Matt

I'd go with plastic container then put them in the styrofoam boxes. Natural LIfe is a good place, I haven't bought anything there as of yet but manfred ( owner ) was pretty helpfull and took time to discuss with me on options when I was planning on setting up my reef again after a 8 yr. highetus (wrong spelling ). Prices a bit steep but his tanks and fish look healthy.

So I came home today and found that my xenia has grown out quite a bit and is now on the same rock as my prized montiporas. Should I cut them back before the move?

I am afraid if I move everything as is, the xenias will start poisining the bin these montiporas are in.

That might be a good idea with the xenia. I would also keep all the corals seperated so they don't touch. Use bags or whatever you have.

When are you planning the move?
I can make as much RO water as you need. Can make salt water if you buy the salt. My water containers are all going to be full through labor day. If you are coming up before that, I will need to buy/burrow another water container unless you only need a few gal.

I know I'm reviving my old thread, but I wanted to show some "after" pictures from the move. Thanks everyone for the advice!

I ended up renting a mini-van from enterprise and driving the whole thing down in one day.

I only had one casualty - a hi-finned banded goby that hadn't been doing too well prior to the move.
