I rescently bought 3 Seio superflows from Drsfosterandsmith.com

(2) 820's
(1) 620

I have 1-820 and 1-620 in my 75 gal tank. I shut the system down to service my sump pumps, rinse the LR and change my water. My seio 620 didn't restart.

I have read of members having most of their problems with the 620's? It would just hum/ vibrate alittle with no flow. I tried bumping it several times, unplugging it and plugging it back in with no luck. So i removed it, pulled it apart and could find nothing visibly wrong with it. Tried running it in the sink. Still same result. Only way i got it to restart again was: I pulled the twist ring and end shaft cone off. Tried turning it by hand that didn't do it. I lifted it slightly out of the water and it took off running.

I put it back together and still it would not start. I had to repeat the remove from water 50% and it took off again. So i put it back together and put it back in the display tank. I figured if it didn't run again i would ship it back and guess defective, but it ran.

No probs with my 820 at all. Is this pump defective in anyway? Or just the typical probs with seio's? Not always restarting.

If you pull the entire impeller assembly out, including the magnet, you'll see that there's a thin white shaft through the cetner. If this shaft doesn't spin within the assembly easily, that is likely the problem. If you can take it out, do so and clean it off until it spins smoothly. If it won't come out, let it sit in a 50/50 mix of water and vinegar until it will.

I've had several Seio's seize on me and this got them working again every time.

They are only a week old. I took it apart and cleaned it, but there was nothing to clean. After reassembling it, it still did it. I remember reading something of people having more troubles with the 620's over all the others. Right now it is running fine. Will have to watch it and stage a power failure again and see what it does.

they are known for this i used to take the front off and start roation with my fingers if you look on the box it says not for use with wave makers because of this problem of restarting

Another thing to try is to loosen the last piece that keeps the impeller in the pump. If it's screwed too tight, it will restrict the shaft from rotating.

Nothing will solve the problem. The only 'cure' is to never shut them off once they get going.

btw, my 1100's do the exact same thing.
