I have a Canon A80 camera and i cannot get decent tank shots with it. Would it be a good camera if i added a certain lens or something or should i get rid of it all together?
got the same camera and yes the photos suck( the reason there is nothing in my gallery). I'll be keeping my eyes on this thread just in case someone out there can educate us.
The D80 is an incredible camera. I would tend to think the settings your using are not correct. For Macro shots, quality of the lens is more important than the camera IMO. Also manual focus is far better than autofocus, sensors simply can't detect the details as well as the human eye. As far as the color, could be a number of issues, White Balance being #1. Ultra clean glass on the INSIDE of the tank, I clean the glass about an hour before hand and then a few minutes before the shot. Try playing around with the fstop in "A" mode. Tripod is an absolute, almost impossible to capture true images without one, also use the shutter timer or remote, sounds trivial, but makes a huge difference in image quality. Even the slight vibration of your finger releasing the shutter causes visual noise
This is with my D40

The D80 is probably an incredible machine but we're talking about a80 which is a point and shoot camera and about 50-100 ebay price. I bought it for over 300.00 when it was first out.
gooli, as for setting i threw the camera out already.
From memory, I believe I had the iso around 50, image at superfine, sadly the rest is no longer part of my memory. What I did do was put in a piece of white PVC next to the coral I am about to shoot and Auto White Balance off of that. You can fine the setting under the function key.
