sensitive to Nitrate

softies can take high levels of nitrates, at least in my tank. my tank was well over 100 for some time (a few years) due to heavy feeding, my softies and shrooms grow like crazy. I have lowered nitrates in the past couple months to about 20 though for other reasons.

Softies will tolerate more nitrates then LPS or SPS...but rest assured none of them like NO3...even in crests an tide pools, or for that matter anywhere in the ocean that softies live NO3 is virtually nothing..

Hi There,

Happened come accross to this interesting subject.

I am trying to preepare my Tank for corals, I heard Softies is good for beginners like me. My water Parameter as of yesterday as follows;

SP. GR. 1.0265 (amonst 1.027 thru coral life deep six hydrometer)
KH : 8 dkh (actually I add 15 grams of baking soda after the text, I like to fix it at 9dkh+)
Ca : 420 ppm (API)
Mg : 1410 (salifert)
No3 : 2.5 ppm (salifert)
Po4 : 0.13 ppm (Hanna)
temp: maintain at 26 degree centrigate
total water volume : almost 440 liters
Liver Rock + few dry rocks running for more than 2 years now : about 50 kg.
in habitant : 8 fish (blue tang, yellow tang, purple tang, PB tang, crown fish , damsel, fox face and one black fish I dont know its name).

my tank almost running for 3 years now.

equipment:
JNS SK2 SKIMMER
GFO REACTOR (TLF 550 WITH ROWA PHOS)
SULFUR DENITRATOR (JNS NR1 WITH SULFUR BEAT AND ARAGONITE)
REEF OCTOPUS BIOPLEET REACTOR POWERED BY RIO 14HF(WITH 500 ML ECOBAK)
MP 40
SEIO 1000
RETURN PUMPS : EHAIM COMPACT 5000+
LIGHTNING: 2 METAL HALIDES 250 W X 2 +_ T5 39 WATT X 4 (2 WHITE 2 ACTINIC BLUE)
RO / DI water + RED SEA PRO CORALS SALT MIX
sometimes using Kalwasser for my Top Off water.
Water Change every 3 weeks 20 %
feeds fish : tetra marine granules XL combo with Thera + A (1 times a day), sometimes feed some nori but not regularly.

Questions: with above water parameter and equipment set up, can I start putting softies? I understrand that my present water conditions is not fit for SPS or LPS but I am trying hard to reduced my No3 and Po4 but at present time, it stay at those level.

Hope to have your evaluations , guidelines and advises.

Cheers,

FWIW, the last time I checked my LFS water for nitrates it was off the charts, (blood red) yet he's got softies, LPS, and sps corals that are not only growing in his tanks, but thriving. Go figure...

My understanding and experience is that nitrates aren't a huge issue for the corals themselves. The 2 problems high nitrates tend to give you, as well as high phosphate are: 1) algae outbreaks, and 2) corals can shift toward brown because of all the successful symbiotic algae growth.

It's not unusual to see crazy growth in tanks with bad nitrates though. Sometimes you see tanks have some serious problems that correlates with high nitrates, my experience is that things went south for other reason which killed something which caused nitrates.

machodik. You can have softies all varieties what you like. Do not go for SPS, but you can try some LPS (duncans) without any problem.

Thanks all for your kind advises.

I went to our lfs that has a tank full of soft corals , ask them to give me some of that said tank water for me to analyse, result : No3 : 1 ppm (salifert) and Po4 : 0.49 ppm (hanna). I think my water param is far better than theirs.

Hi there!

I am just about to buy some softies and LPS for my said tank to being my road towards corals (even challemge SPS, my goal). well, to begin with, few questions needs your some precious advises:

1) I am a bottle of Coral Dip that my good friend bought to me last year but it is already expire yet never been opened and sealed (as original sealed from factory) , can I use this to dip any new sofities I bought from my LFS? should I have to do it or just skip this process and after aclimation then just put the softies inside my tank directly?

2) I am new and not so familiar with sofites, can any one advise what species should a rookies like me to begin with. previously I have some hammer heads.

cheers,

Why is that? (sps) If you don't mind me asking?

small-polyped stony coral
i believe he was referring to why he cant have SPS not what SPS stands for..

personally with current equipment and water parameters i see no reason what so ever for the OP to keep any species of coral...good luck with your reefing, most would be happy to maintain your parameters for three years...

I would really recommend some Zoanthids. You can find them pretty cheaply and can get an incredible range of colors that look awesome during the day but amazing at night with the blue lights on. All of my Zoanthids, hammer coral, 2 brain corals, and flowerpot thrive in my tank and I always have about 5 ppm of nitrate in my tank which if I remember your parameters is double what you have. In fact one of the brain corals (LPS) I bought had a nasty looking rusty colored scab on its flesh when I bought it, the spot covered the sunken section of one entire polyp. Since adding it to my tank about 1 month ago it has been recovering, lost the scab, and is regaining the original color back. With my parameters as they are, with my coral actually doing really well, I think your tank will be fine for most any LPS and some of the more forgiving SPS corals if your light and flow is right.
