Sentinel for red bugs

Well now that interceptor is officially discontinued and sentinel is on the shelves I was wondering if anyone has been using it and if so what have you noticed?

I decided to be a guinea pig myself about three weeks ago. I stopped at the vet and got two of the larger tabs.

I like to dose my Qt tank pretty regularly so I figured i'd see if this stuff was a safe useable alternative.

In case you are unfamiliar with sentinel it's basically interceptor with an added ingredient to help control flea eggs called lufenuron. The large tabs contain 23 mg of MO(interceptor) and 460 mg of lufenuron.

Roughly three weeks ago I decided to dose my qt with one half of a tab. The system is about 70 gallons.

First thing I noticed is that the sentinel has a coating on the pill and that it crushed up pure white as opposed to the familiar brown. Without hesitation I dumped it in.

I should mention that I this system does not have any red bugs in it at all. This has been mostly an experiment on weather sentinel is safe as opposed to effective, which i'll touch on soon.

The treatment was pretty standard. I saw nothing outright that would let me think the lufenuron had any immediate bad effects.

I left the tab in with my skimmer off overnight. When i turned it back on it overflowed for a long time. I ended up turning it way down for a day for so.That was a significant difference. With interceptor the skimmer would skim a ton out right away but never actually overflow.

I have a few resident hermits that I would take out when I dosed interceptor. I left a couple larger ones in and some smaller red ones. Interestingly they all survived the treatment. I am a little concerned by this.

Fast forward a week. I dosed the other pill but this time I rinsed the coating off.

Treatment was the same. All the crabs survived again.

No ill effects on any coral, just unfortunate that I couldn't confirm that it kills RB.

Using the old 23mg interceptor tab would wipe out any small hermit with in hours. I was not really using this test to see if it kills the bugs because I know Interceptor does at that strength. Or at least it used to. For whatever reason 23mg of the same active ingredient left the crabs seemingly unaffected.

At this point it's been about three weeks and the thank seems fine. No mystery occurrences or coral deaths at all.

If anyone has tried sentinel or plans to, please share your experiences.

Is "Sentinel" over the counter or prescription only? I might have to give it a try.

ALL canine heartworm prevention is Rx only (in Texas anyway). It does not matter what kind... Interceptor,Sentinel,Heartgard,Trifexis or anything else made to kill heartworms. I'm not sure about other states.

Great news on the hermit crabs, just hope it kills red bugs, I will be following the thread in hopes to get some answers in the near future.

How come some sort of company doesn't just produce interceptor or something alike specifically for red bugs .... ? Don't mean to derail I feel like I should go buy some interceptor now since its discontinued incase I ever get them

If you can find it by all means do. It's been out of production since january of 2012 so anything you find will be getting close to being expired.

Interceptor spectrum is pretty readily available for anyone that knows how to use the internet. From everything I've seen the spectrum has been shown to work just as well as the regular interceptor.

My guess is that there wouldn't be enough of a demand to make it profitable manufacturing it specifically for red bugs.

Indeed it is available from Australia but the spectrum also contains an additional ingredient. I believe it's very similar to the active ingredient in prazi pro

I know people have been using this as well but I have not read much feedback on negative effects. I suppose the same experiment can be done with the spectrum

I was really looking to find if sentinel is a safe alternative seeing as it is considerably easier to obtain now.

Actually, I guess I look at it like the spectrum is easier to obtain. No presecription or vert needed, just order online and it shows up a week or two later. I can't imagine that the praziquantel is harmful since prazipro is dosed in much higher amounts by wrasse keepers and for other fish fairly often in reef tanks.

However, I guess it's good to have alternatives, so thanks for being the guinea pig.

That is true. I guess I do take for granted that my vet will give me as much as I need. I have heard a number of stories about vets not being so understanding.

I suppose we should definitely open up the discussion to anyone who has used the spectrum as well.

I'd love to hear some feedback.

The really interesting thing is that the hermits lived... It almost seems like a bad sign rather than a good one. We need to find you some red bugs!

Any fish in the QT tank? I'd assume that if the hermits and corals aren't showing ill effects it should be fine, but would be nice to know for good measure.

By the way, I'm heading down your way for a golf tournament in a few weeks. Will give you a shout to see if you're around and available. :bounce2: I've got some spectrum just in case and would trade a couple tabs towards a frag if you want to give it a shot.

I used one small Sentinel Tab a few months back to treat red bugs, killed a couple peppermint shrimp and hermits but that was to be expected. Only did one treatment, havent seen any Red Bugs since!!! No coral or fish loss.

I tried purchasing interceptor off of one of those internet sites and you have to plug in your perscription for it. So I was unsuccessful buying it online.

Has anyone tried AquaVision Aquatics Coral Dip Solution? The package has a picture of a coral with red bugs on it, so to me, that implies it might work on red bugs. There are not any details on what pests it kills from what I can see.

I ordered mine from mega pet supplies. No prescription was required when I placed my order.
