September 13 collecting trip with LIRA and Atlantis Marine World

BUMP for a spectacular aquarium and super gracious curator (Joe Y.), also for another great club out in LI. Sounds like it'll be a fun day and if all works out a wonderful night before ;)

Sure, all coming would count. Rick, who is Scott F (what ID) because I don't have him on the list. I haven't had anyone let me know about family members. Diego sounded like it was just him, but I just emailed him to check.

BucknellReefer won't be able to make it. Still trying to reach a couple of others.

Hi gang, unfortunately we will not have enough people to do the Friday night stayover at the aquarium. After checking with Diego, Scott F., and the others I was reaching, there are only 8 people interested in staying over. Given this level of interest, perhaps next year we can work on doing something joint with another club, but there's not time to do that now.

I'll be posting specific information about motels for those who want it. Joe let us know that the aquarium has a discounted rate with a Best Western very close by, for $109 or $119, something like that. And Larry found another place about 20 minutes away through priceline that was $79. If people coordinate on splitting rooms, it will the same price for staying over Friday night. As soon as I have the details of those motels, I'll post them.

Hi. Sorry it has taken so long to post final details, but Sanjay and I have been waiting to hear from Joe. This is the plan as we have it:

Saturday meeting time:
For anyone touring the aquarium, we’ll meet at Saturday, 10 AM, at the Atlantis Marine World Aquarium. Website (for directions) is: http://www.atlantismarineworld.com/

The collecting trip meets at 1 PM. The Beach location is in Hampton Bays, along 27A (east Montauk Hwy) where it goes along Shinnecock Bay, a link to the beach site is at:

Friday night:
As you read, we didn’t have enough people for the aquarium sleepover. If you want to drive in Friday night, here are two possibilities. If rooms are split, the price will be pretty close to the sleepover.
1) Atlantis has a deal with the Best Western in Riverhead for either $109 or $119 (I can’t find my old email with the rate!). That’s much better than their usual $200+. I am waiting to find out from Joe if we need a special code or something for the discount, but I think if you tell them it’s related to Atlantis Marine World they can find the right discount. I’ll post the discount code as soon as I have it.
2) On priceline.com, there are hotels as low as $99 in Smithtown (20 miles) and Medford (15 miles). I couldn’t book a block of rooms because they’d charge my card right away.

Currently going, as far as I know, are Rick P, Michelle L, Sanjay J, me, Diego S., Larry and Jennifer F., and Scott F. plus 2 family members. In case anyone should need it, my cell # is 814-777-7417.

I am still recruiting so Hopefully we have more people to come aboard the journey. Even though its too late for the overnight stay I am still hopeful more will come to collect and see the aquarium.

Carl and I are going to collect at other locations after the intital collection.

Would this be open to members of PMAS if they wanted to go? I would be in for sure had I known about it earlier. I imagine I could have got another 5-8 people too.

You guys all ready for the trip?

Ray I am not sure how it works. I was kinda hoping that Scott or Sanjay would have chimed in here. It would have been nice to see some of the Burgh folks come to collect and hang out!

Hi, chiming in after < 24 hours... This is something that Joe at Atlantis opened up to just LIRA and NCPARS members. Next year, we may try to do it as a joint venture with some other clubs, but it's dependent on Joe and LIRA's willingness to do that. We always welcome new NCPARS members, of course, and like I say, hopefully we can do more joint activities in the future to benefit members of multiple clubs.

Thanks for the info.

I am sure there are a handfull of us at PMAS that would join in this next year if LIRA wouldn't mind us tagging along.

That's good to know, Ray, thanks. A couple of years ago when NCPARS did this, there were quite a few people, but this year it was smaller. I am sure some of it is Joe doesn't want it tooooo big... but we can make that work by setting a max size and encouraging early signups. On the agenda for next year!

Thanks,
Scott

For those of you who did not make the trip.. you missed out on a great opportunity to see the best coral reef aquarium.

Here are some pics for your pleasure....

WOW! I wish i could have gone. Those pictures are awesome and the schools of fish are breath taking.I never thought you could keep schools of fish like that in a tank with out the corals being eaten or totally browned out from nutrients.Next year i will do everything in my powers to make it.Nice photos sanjay.what camera and lense are you using.

It was a great trip (except for driving in the rain!). The collecting was interesting (butterflies, crabs, shrimp, seahorse, coronets, pipefish). From what people said last year had a lot more stuff turn up, and I guess that's just the way the gulf stream works. The aquarium was awesome, both the main reef tank, and all the other parts (penguins, sharks, octopus, etc.). Joe was incredibly generous with his time, I think he spent pretty much all of Saturday from 10-5 showing us 3 or 4 back areas, talking about talks, and doing collecting. We had some interesting discussions about how to do this next year so that we definitely do a sleepover. I'm going to plan to do it again - I don't think it's something I'd get tired of!

You know Raynist, iirc NCPARS member fee is on par with ours, $25 or $30 for the year. If being a member was the stopping point, pretty sure you could have pulled that off.

Many of the PGH members have at times had NCPARS and CSEA memberships.

You missed out on a great trip.

I am using a Nikon D70, and these pics were with the stock lens that came with it 18-70 mm.

It was alot of fun, the aquarium was great. The water was warm for collecting and the rain had subsided for the collection!

Thanks Joe for a wonderful day and the opportunity to see behind the scenes!

Sanjay those pictures are great! Do you have any of what was collected?

Here are some of the collecting pics I got from Kathy. I did not have my camera with me that day.
