serpent star help

So The other day I noticed one of my serpent stars was missing. Since then every day I have been looking for it before lights on , lights on, lights out, but nothing... yesterday while trying to unstick my topoff float valve I glanced around under tank and saw it in the overflow compartment.
My question is can I fish it out into the air for a second or 3? I had been told to not let them get air at all. I don't see how it got back there without exposing itself to air though. His disc is about 1" and tip to tip he's about 7-8" we got it with the tank about a year and a half ago.

Yes they will survive just fine for short time in the air. Just do it super quick. Pull it out and toss it in your tank. Most aquariums have touch tanks with tons of various stars, bat and serpent/brittle that you can take out and hold and play with.
