Server Host

Hey guys, David just told me that he won't be able to host the ETRC website soon.

He's giving us a month to switch it to another server. He's switching to another server or domain or whatever, so he has less room, I believe.

It's not that he dislikes hosting it in any way, just that he cannot do it anymore.

SO we need to find a new place to host the website.

i've been using myhosting.com for my business for about 10 years...its pretty cheap and reliable. richard uses meetup.com for his music get-togethers...i think he was talking to somebody about it at the last meeting...

Mel

I have not been able to access the site for the last two or three days. Have we been dropped already?

Eddie

Apparently our DNS isn't pointing to the correct thing.

Who is taking care of the website? They need to email David and he can tell them where to redirect the DNS.

I may not be using the correct language in speaking about the intertube stuff.

We need to get the website up so I can work on donations for our swap... The clock is ticking and my time is limited...

Yeah...no kidding, right?

Not sure who's taking care of it (especially not sure since I have nothing to do with the board of directors) BUT David just emailed me and said that we need to get it taken care of right away. He was starting to think about deleting some stuff from it TODAY.

I don't believe he's heard from anyone about it.

I'm not sure what more I can do about this than alert the club since I have zero website-building background. Either someone is going to get in touch with him in the next day or so or I have no choice but to tell him it's ok to go ahead and delete stuff.

I have looked around a bit and Godaddy seems to be the cheapest place... I literally know nothing about this... FYI I approve anything necessary to get the website going again...

Godaddy is the site I use. They are very reasonable and I have never had any trouble. You set up everything yourself which requires someone to link the site to the hosting. My web guy did that part for me. I guess I could check into how to do it if no one else can do it.

Setting up your account is easy and anyone can do that part. You have to buy hosting and a domain name. I believe it was around $80.00 for one year.

Travis~ How expensive is it to have someone maintain your website... I mean beside the domain fees... I'm thinking the club is going to have to start looking into this sooner rather than later... Our main goal as of this second is just to get the website back up, but we will also have to figure out a more long term solution... Thus far everytime we find someone to maintain our website it lasts all of a month or two, or just doesn't happen at all... Might be time to use club funds and hire a pro...

Even though you own the name you have to pay to keep it active, unless you have done this through another site.

The guy I use is CRAZY expensive and also in FL. You should be able to find someone local and reasonable but, it will still be expensive unless you can find a friend.

I can recommend www.ehostpros.com - very cheap and reliable I've used them for several websites in the past and still have my personal site there... It's about $50/year for one site.

If the domain is already registered, which it sounds like it is, then someone just has to take the DNS server numbers and enter them on the new server. It takes a few days for "the internet" to recognize the change.

Maintaining a basic website like ours is easy once the design is set up. If it's basic stuff like photoshopping logos and setting up html frames and tables and stuff for the new site, and then just adding new members, meetings, notes, pages, photos, etc, I'll do it.
I don't do php or any of the fancy stuff though, but I can't see why we'd need that.

We have emailed the fellow who is now hosting, David. We got no reply. I will have the change over made soon.

Eddie

Wildman: YES WE OWN THE DOMAIN. WE PURCHASED IT FOR THREE YEARS, I believe.

Eddie: I have a hard time believing that David didn't email you back. He may not have emailed you back within a hour. He's answered numerous emails from me this and last week, plus he's expecting an email from someone associated with the reef club. There is a remote possibility that one of your emails went into a spam folder. I can ask him, I guess.

ALL:
There are two issues.
A) We need to fix the website as it stands, which requires someone to go into the domain or something and repoint the DNS? Someone needs to email David and find out about this.

B) We need to move the website to another server AFTER we get it back up and running. It is apparently a lot easier to do this with an active website, rather than from a backup of the website. David was trying to make a backup last night when I talked to him but he cautioned me that it will be much easier to just move it rather than use a backup.

All you have to do is open an account with godaddy. Have Scott point your name servers to GODaddy (because he's the owner), upload your content to GoDaddy's servers, they will setup your site on their servers and allow 24 hours for DNS to update. No matter what you do you must provide GoDaddy the site data or they mat provide an FTP account so you can do this yourself. It can't teleport itself through the internet to their servers.

I've offered numerous times to help with the site but never get a reply. I do this stuff for a living. the offers on the table for the last time...it sounds like you guys have it some what under control so i'll leave it at that.

I will have the change over made soon.

To whom will the change over be made to??? After talking with Adam and GoDaddy, I was under the impression that the host server could not be changed without the permission of the website administrator, which by the books is Scott...

I just want this resolved sooner rather than later and it needs to be before Dave has to delete our old site... I hope someone has some backup files somewhere...
