Set up my first saltwater tank last night!

I've been a member of reefcentral for years now, but didn't want to post until I could actually set up a reef tank, and for quite awhile that looked like it wouldn't happen anytime soon.

But it turns out that my brother, who's had a reef tank for a few years, was planning to give me a bunch of his old equipment, and buy and build the rest that was needed so that he could give it to me for Christmas so that I could set it up in a 29 gallon I had laying empty. However, when someone near him got out of the hobby and sold him 100 lbs. of live rock for $50, he decided that it was too good of a deal to pass up, and also that he didn't have room to keep all the rock until Christmas, and so he told me early, and yesterday he drive in from San Jose with everything.

So, I got the tank up in the living room last week and added salt and water and let it mix. Yesterday we put in all the equipment, and since we figured that leaving the rock sitting in the buckets it had travelled from CA in was probably a lot worse than adding it to the tank, we put the rocks in.

It's nice rock, too. Lots of coralline, and quite a few hitchhikers that I've been able to see so far, including a Hawaiian feather duster which my brother couldn't get off the rock, and a few small soft corals (some zoos and a couple of others I can't remember).

I do have a few questions, though, which I think can be best answered in this forum instead of one of the general ones. First, is there any place locally that I can get some acrylic weld-on? The overflow box got a small crack in it - it's inside the tank, so no leak problems, but I worry that if the power goes out it may let the box drain enough to lose siphon, and I really, really don't want to have to explain to my wife why there's 10 gallons of salt water all over her living room carpet.

Also, are there any formal meetings/get-togethers/frag swaps/etc. in Tucson? I'd like to get to know other reefers around here, especially since I'm new at actually keeping a saltwater tank.

And finally, am I going to have heat problems this summer? I keep the house air-conditioned, but my brother also managed to convince my parents to chip in and they bought me a 250 watt MH retrofit system. I probably won't have a hood ready for it for a month or so, and I really want a hood that completely covers the tank (I have a 2 year old and a 3 year old, and don't want them "feeding the fishies"). Will fans in the hood blowing across the top of the water be enough, or will I need to start researching chillers?

Awesome, welcome to the forum and the hobby.

So your tank is 29 gallon? I would say that with a 250 halide and fully enclosed canopy you'll probably need a chiller. I got away without one for 2 years on my 55g with two 175 halides and two VHO, but after adding two more 250s I needed the chiller. Icecap variable speed fans do an awesome cooling job, but that's a lot of evaporation in a 29.

You could drill your tank so you don't have to use a siphon overflow. Check Cerreta's 110 thread. He drilled a bunch of holes, it's easy.

We get together from time to time to sell/trade/auction corals, and have a great time. I don't think anyone has suggested when the next one will be.

Hi g0del, I just setup my tank on Saturday!! I am learning more and more things as I go... My tank just hit it's Brown Algae bloom yesterday... It is coming along... Good luck on yours!! These guys are really a great help, if you have any questions!!

Cool and welcome. If you can keep the room temp below 76 degrees, your halide is >8 inches above the water level, and you have a good fan in the hood, you may be able to get by without a chiller, but not likely on a 29. Larger tanks are a bit more temp stable.

It also depends on what type of pumps you are using. Submersible pumps and some other centrigual (like the T4) shed their heat to the water. Try to avoid those on this tank.

We have had two nice events with coral sales and swaps already this year. The summer is coming, so no plans on the next that i know of.

I have some weld on that you can borrow. I think I bought it online.

Thanks. I guess when I get the light ready, I'll try those suggestions, and see how hot it gets so I can see what kind of chilling I need. It'd be nice to be able to get away with just an iceprobe, instead of having to get a much more expensive unit designed for a much larger tank.

Welcome, and good luck! Word to the wise - I would hold off a minute on spending too much on any new equip. You may decide that a 29 is just not big enough!

I also have a 2 year old who loves her "shishies." I do have a hood that completely covers the top of the tank, but found that it helps to have a spot nearby where she can sit and stick her face against the front of the tank. That's also kept her from messing with the sump and skimmer.

I missed this the first time I read it. I'd really appreciate it. How should I get in touch with you about that?

Oh, I'm not planning on spending right now. I already have the MH, I just need a hood to mount it in, Once that's ready, if it really does heat up the tank too much, I'll just hold off on using it until the weather cools down  or until I can pick up a chiller. And then I'd know exactly how much it needs to be cooled. As for a bigger tank - not anytime soon. The wife would kill me.

The tank's low enough that my kids can see into it, but my daughter is really mischievous. I've been drilling it into her head every day that she can't touch anything in the tank, and she can't put anything in the tank, but I don't think that will stop her forever. It didn't stop her from dropping a bar of soap into my 55 freshwater tank last month (luckily the only fish in there currently are 2 large plecos, which didn't have a problem at all, though it did seem to force the tank to re-cycle).
