set up, new to hobby

After reading all the threads to reefgirlsara about bio balls and nitrates, I am beginning to wonder if I have the dumbest set up of all. I have an Empereor with 2 bio wheels and 4 cartridges, 2 with charcoal and 2 with ceramic tube like things in them for bacteria. Also a hot magnun with a charcoal ( or sometimes nitrate sponge) AND a phosban reactor with nitrate sponge in it. I obviously am fighting nitrates and I am now thinking I am creating my problem! What should I keep and what should I get rid of? I have a good skimmer that seems to work very well. Also 2 maxi jets that alternate on each side of tank. I have 2-3" sand bed and LOTS of live rock. The tank is probably half full of rock and shells that have been there for 2 years. It is a 46 bow front. Can anybody tell me what to do? I would do a refugium, but don't even know how to start. Or maybe a sump? Still don't know how to do that either and don't have anyone to show me.

i think going with a sump would be your best move. remember to not make any changes quickly. i would setup the sump first and then slowly start removing your HOB filters. these articles will give you all the info you need on sumps
