Setting up email notifications for AC3

I need to set my AC3 to email me if things get out of range. I tried to guess my way through it, and had the manual in my hands, but didn't have much luck when I selected "send test email" so ... can anyone help me sort that out? If you know of a thread that spells it out, just link me and save yourself time.

I leave for a trip tomorrow, and really should have gotten this done sooner.

I just resetup mine last night because I am dumb and erased the memory on my ACIII. This is what I did to get mine to work.

From the main display press Select.

Scroll down to Setup Menu and Select.

Scroll down to Net Setup and Select.

Scroll down to Email Setup and Select.

1. Email : Off or On. Obviously make sure it says On.

2. SMTP Server. I set it to the SMTP for my service provider. For example smtp.cox.net.

3. From Address: I set this to one of my personal email address. I think the only thing this does is show up in the from box when you receive an email.

4. To Address: I set this to my webmail account. I use gmail. Don't know if the fact that it is a webmail account matters but it works for me so I went with it.

5. Alt To Address: I set this to my work email account. So I get the alerts sent to two different email address.

6. Email Auth. I have it set to Off.

7. Auth User. Left blank because Email Auth is Off.

8. Auth Password. Again left blank because Email Auth is Off.

9. Alarm. I have it set to ALM. This is the Time Name I have set up in my program.

10. ReEmail Delay. I set it to 15M. This is how often you get email alerts when ALM is triggered.

11. SMTP Port. I left it at the default of 25.

12. Email Test. After I select this both emails pop up on my Blackberry within about 30 seconds.

I hope this helps. Good Luck.

Brad

Well, no luck. As far as I know, everything matched your suggestions. I'll probably leave it turned off since I don't have any ALM states set at the moment.

When I first set up the AC3, I had it tethered to my laptop for easy programming. I can't seem to access it via browser like I did before. Odds are I changed something when I set it up to talk to my router and iPhone. Until I can program in the alarm settings, this project may be pointless.

The email feature is not going to work unless your ACIII is talking to your router and out to the internet to send the email. You need to make sure that your router has port forwarding enabled for port 80 on the specific IP address assigned to your ACIII. Port 80 is the default, but you can set the ACIII to use any port if I remember correctly. Best way to test if you have port forwarding setup correctly is to go to this website to get your ip address:

http://www.whatismyip.com/

copy the ip address into your browsers address bar. If configured correctly you should get the login pop up for your ACIII.

Also, does AquaNotes still talk with your ACIII?

Hope this helps.

If anyone else understands this and can explain it better, please jump in.

Brad

Well, it must be doing something right because it display the data on my iPhone and it also does it in a little banner on my site. I do have everything configured for port forwarding, and have all of that set up. It has been working all along.

I don't use the AquaNotes software because it should work with your browser. But for some reason, I can't seem to get to it via my browser any more. I don't know why that is. I may have to grab a 6' cable and take my laptop over to it to get a better connection. What I did this evening was unplug my Cat5 cable (from the AC3 to my router) and plugged it into the back of the laptop, but it never accessed it.

Here is something else you can try to see if the ACIII it talking with your router.

First, do you have your computer and your ACIII connected to the same router? If so this should work.

On the ACIII press Select -> Setup -> Net Setup -> IP Address and record your IP address

On your computer goto Run and type "cmd" When the window pops up type in "ping 'your ip address from above'"

Example ping 192.168.1.1

Do you you get a reply from the IP address or does it say host unreachable? If you get a reply then this means your computer can talk to your ACIII.

If that works. Open up a brower and enter the same IP address into the address bar. Do you get the logon for the ACIII?

If that works your ACIII is working properly inside your network.

Finally enter the address you got from the whatismyip.com website. Does this work? I think this is where it is not work.

Sorry if I over simplied this.

Brad

I pinged it and it worked perfectly. 4 packets sent, 4 received, 0 lost.

Firefox can't find anything when I type in that same IP address. Nor the one I get from that site you recommended.

Check this setting:

Select -> Setup -> Net Setup -> Http Port:

Is this set to 80? Or is it something different?

Brad

It is set to a different number, instead of the default 80. So for example, let's just say it is 8099. What now?

If your Http Port: is set to something other than 80, this would explain why you can not access your ACIII from your web brower. When you enter in a website or IP address in a web browers, it looks at port 80 for a response. Try entering the IP Address that you get from:

ACIII press Select -> Setup -> Net Setup -> IP Address

and put a colan and then the port.

Example: 192.168.1.1:8099

You are now telling the browers to look for at a port other than 80.

If this works you can also test it with the IP address you get from whatismyip.com.

Let me know if this works.

Brad

No luck. I don't get it. And it has worked in the past, btw. Prior to the iPhone connection, which uses Port 23 anyway.

When I tried the correct IP address with the modified port setting, I get this:

Failed to Connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at xx.xxx.88.122:80xx.

Though the site seems valid, the browser was unable to establish a connection.

* Could the site be temporarily unavailable? Try again later.
* Are you unable to browse other sites? Check the computer's network connection.
* Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy? Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.

And I get the same with the IP address that comes from whatismyip.com (with the port appended as well).

Just to recap, my AC3 is tethered directly to the Netgear router via Cat5 cabling. I do use Port Forwarding in its control panel.

Where can I find the instructions for setting up the ACIII to work with the iPhone? Maybe if I can see what changes were made it might help.

Brad

I have been reading through the thread. Makes me want an iPhone. Anyway, I haven't seen any setup instructions. Where can I fine the actual directions to set it up?

Brad

I think everyone is scared to post that kind of information for fear of being hacked. I don't know what others can do, but it seems prudent to not share too much online.

The iPhone app has to get four pieces of information:
URL (which is created on no-ip.org)
PORT
username
password

Someone posted in my thread stating they think the problem may be that I'm using Port Forwarding twice, once for the iPhone to the no-ip URL, and the other to a different Port. So my router may be confused by being told to go to two different ports with identical IP addresses. That's my guess. Like this:

xxx.xxx.0.71
Port 8099

xxx.xxx.0.71
Port 23

I had one of those signature generators working for a bit, where it posts your tank's parameters at the base of your post (on sites that allow it), and it was working just fine from my site. Now it seems to be data-less. So while one thing works - the iPhone - the other option seems broken.

This is 100% supported and will not cause any issues. Port forward is per 'port' and is not affected by the source or destination ports.

I'm not 100% certain about your setup but something to consider with the IPhone and your website (which you mentioned uses telnet nad port 23) is that the AC3 supports only 1 telnet connection; meaning 1 connection OK, beyond that the connections will be denied.

Correct, simultaneous connections don't work. But I'd imagine for the most part, they only hit at the same time occasionally, and would end up with a denial.

I guess I must have screwed something up then.
