setting up my new tank

I have been setting up a new tank. I have been doing research for amount a year and a half and bought a tank six months ago. I have been building it into a bar in my basement. I have been posting on the Central IL club site for a while. lately all they do is wine at each other and complain so I am shying away from their forum.

I live in a little town an hour south of Springfield IL. I get down to St. Louis for cardinal games and to visit friends so I figured I would hang out here for a while.

here is how my tank is coming along. I just put the live rock in it Friday night I bought it from a reefer in Chicago and a friend of mine brought it to me Friday night. I am new to the reef thing so I am sure I will have lots of questions.

just thought I would introduce myself. I am sure I will have lots of questions for all of you in the furure.

Welcome to SLASH. The setup is looking good. Let us know if we can do anything to help. :-)

Great to have you here!! We are a pretty spread out and tight knit group here and we welcome you to spend your time with us!

The tank looks really nice with the aquascaping you did. What kind of liverock is that?

Dave:)

just another grease monkey! I work for my dad he owns an independent shop. we also sell tires.

the rock he said was a mix I think it is mostly figi.

I am a little confused on the cycling. the rock came directly out of his tank. traveled three hours (in water) to my house were it went directly into my tank. I did a water test on sat afternoon I had no ammonia no trites or trates. will this stuff spike? I am expecting some high trites or trates I thought I would have some ammonia too there is not going to be too much die off because the rock never left water.

the rock has some great coloring I have seen some little worm looking things on the rock once and a while.

I hope by buying this rock I may avoid a huge algae blitz. we will see.

still learning thanks for all the support.

Cool setup

What? What did you say?! Oh, ya ask away! :D

Wow Pana, thats not to far. Here is a question for ya. What is the name of that restaurant/bar that is in an old church in Hillsboro, IL? is that still there? If so we could have a SLASH road trip coming your way with all these Pana folks.

I set my 120 up with established rock. I did not have the ammonia and nitrite spikes like in a full blown cycle. I did get diatoms on the rock, sand, and glass for awhile. Some small bits of hair algae and a couple patches of cyano. These eventually faded on their own. Only added two small fish, clown and chromis, from my previous tank in the beginning so bioload was light for it to start with.

i am not sure about that bar i will have to ask around. if you guys tak a road trip come on by the beer is only a couple of feet from the fish tank. it was planned that way.

I cant think of the name of the place but as of last year it was still open. It is supposed to be a great place.

been a while since I have had an update. the tank has been up and running for about a month. I did not have much of a cycle. because of the rock coming directly out of a established tank. I had some diatoms for a little while. but it has for the most part cleared out.

I have 2 chromis and a lawnmower blenny. I love the blenny. he is very fun to watch.

I also added a hammer and a zoo frag that fkdenton got me at the frag swap.

on sat I went to gwa and got two rics. I was real impressed with chads store. the most coral in a store I have been to so far.
it is about the same distance for me to go to gwa as to Bloomington. I will be going to gwa for my stuff in the future.

pic of lawnmower and hammer I have a bad camera so you have to look close to see the lawnmower. of course sometimes I can not see him in the tank against the rocks.

my camera is cheap so the pics are pretty sad but you can get the gist. I have no more money left to buy a camera.

how about another updated full tank shot.

These are really good pics because a year from now you will love to see the progress. :D

2 chromis???? What happened to the other 3. Just joking, your going to end up with one mean chromis in there.

Ya i know i have not had much luck with chromis. i started out with five. and i have two left. nothing wrong with the water or fish i could not get them out when they were picking on each other. they just whent after the weekest one and after they killed him they would go down the line. the two have been doing fine we will see.

your set up is excellent and very creative...I thoroughly approve of th4e way you have built this into the bar

very good work
