Setting up ozone tonight.

Since making the change to bare bottom by water has been really clear, but I am stickler for crystal clear water. Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ve always wanted that ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œcanââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t see that there is water in the tankââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ look. So I purchased a Milwaukee ORP controller and and GENX ozonier. Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ve measured ORP for 5 days per the manufactures instructions. The ORP has leveled off at about 300. I was actually happy with that, as itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s higher that a lot of other readings Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ve seen. Now comes time to hook up the ozone, I am very hesitant since things have been going really well but I just have to try it. I am going to set the controller to 350 and the ozonier to 100. This puts me at about half of the recommended ozone and well below the max recommends ORP of 400ish. Hopefully it will be a safe set up! I am going to snap some pics of a white piece of paper length wise so I can post results. The before will be up tonightââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦Ã¢â"šÂ¬Ã‚¦Ã¢â"šÂ¬Ã‚¦Ã¢â"šÂ¬Ã‚¦..

I would NOT start with half the recommended dosing but with one tenth to start with. Moreover I do not believe in ORP control for ozone dosing. The hobby ORP electrodes are too finicky to be a reliable way of controlling ozone. There are some very good ORP electrodes on the market but I doubt you are willing to pay that price.
My very personal recommendation is to ditch the ORP electrode, plug in the Ozonizer directly to the skimmer and usea VERY small setting. Let it run for a day and make sure that the outflow of the skimmer goes through some activated carbon to capture all free ozone before it enters the tank. If you have the desired effect and no side effect, then you are all set, otherwise increase the dose very carefully.

I kinda like the saying..."If it ain't broke, don't fix it". But best of luck to you all the same. Hope all goes well for ya. Your tank looks awesome in the other pics you posted. JMO
 
id be to scared to use ozone, like randy said, only a few PPM over time can kill ya, plus in the even of a malfunction, its flamable, all that good stuff, probably wont ignite unless in high enough concentration, but good luck
 
I got word that my parents German Sheppard needed to be put down so I headed over there tonight, so no playing with the tank.

That being said I am going to hook up to the skimmer for now, and I think I'll take Jens advice and lower the dosage. I am going to use the orp because I have it but I am not striving for a number just clear water and even if its off, its another level of protection.We'll see!
 
I have to agree with Jens Kallmeyer, ORP probes are not accurate, and many people have caused major wipe outs injecting ozone by the numbers these probes kick out. I have been running ozone for 5 months now, and I only inject for a couple hours each day to clear the water. I am using a diy ozone reactor. I do have a probe and monitor the tank just as backup. Good luck with ozone, its a great tool when used correctly.
 
Got the ozone hooked up and to tell the truth I am not really that impressed and had a couple small issues. First off Black magic carbon is horrible I rinsed it for 5 minutes and as soon as the carbon hit water my sump turned black! I went and got some black diamond and stuck it in a 100 micron filter sock. The 1500 gph seemed to be breaking up the carbon so all I saw in my skimmer for 3 days was carbon! I really need to cobble together a reactor. As for the results it did polish up the water but no more than if I set the skimmer really wet and did a good water change. I would of like to have seen the effect on one of my old sand bed tanks in which I battled yellow water. In my BB tank I really don't think there is much more clarity to be had. I took before and after pics but the paper was white in both so it looks the same. My verdict? I am going to run it when I do a major cleaning just to strip any color out of the water but I will not be running 24/7. This stuff is powerful, running 25% for one hour raised my ORP from 300 to 340. In the same time period failing to put carbon on my waste collector resulted in nice headache! I think its too big a of a risk to run 24/7 for the results I've seen.

A friend of mine said the same thing about ozone. He felt his water got a little clearer but nothing out of the ordinary. I guess if you have some funky water you would see some out of this world results... Maybe the guys still running turf scrubbers?

It dissipates pretty quickly, the carbon picks up the by products it creates. Some guys don't even run carbon, not sure how I feel about that.....

The O3 breaks apart into an O2 molecule and a free O-radical. This radical wants to bind to anything it can get hold of, thereby oxidizing the other compound.
By having activated carbon in the outflow all unreacted radicals will react with the carbon and form CO2.

REEF-DADDY: I had the exact same results since running ozone. Just like you said, BB Tanks are much cleaner,and I feel that they do not benefit from the addition of ozone as much of a tank with a sandbed. I still run mine 24/7, probably only because I figure that if I spent the money, I might as well use it. But, overall, if you run your BB tank right, I guess you really just don't need ozone.
 
There is no difference in the pics. As a matter of fact. I found a piece of carbon in the air intake of my skimmer. So for the last 24 hours the mighty B3 has been back to 100%, my ORP jumped to 350 which is as high as I saw it on the ozone. Now that I have it I'll likely hook it up every so often but don't see the need for daily use........
