Setting up QT tank....

I am wanting to set up a qt tank for corals...It will be mostly sps because I am wanting to get some of the exotic corals you cant get around here. My problem is that I dont trust other tanks. I am going to be using a 40 breeder for the tank. I am going to do a LED light so I dont have heat problems. Do I need to run a skimmer or can I just use a HOB filter? Also what qt procedure should I do besides dipping it in revive or iodine??? Thanks for your help.......:wavehand:

Tank size is up to you and what you plan to QT. I would and did, go with a smaller less expensive tank due to many factors. Price is number 1. If you ever treat with any meds that cant be filtered out with carbon then the tank is worthless for anything else especially copper. THe silicone in the tanks and even the glass to an extent absorbs these elements and cant be removed effectively. Also, why pay more for a larger heater, the power to heat it and the lights to light it? If you intend on a bunch of frags you dont need lots of room. Just use eggcrate stands and shelves where you can use frag plugs that fit right in each square. also, theres no real need for a skimmer as you want the tank to be BB and in most cases there will be no fish in it so waterchanges will suffice. A HOB filter is perfect as long as you have the ability to use carbon in it and not lose the bacterial filter each cleaning(like cartridge styles). Aquaclears are nice for that.

LED is a poor choice unless you have one you arent using. They are garunteed to stress most coral that dont come from LED lit tanks. They have very different strectral and par numbers. A good T5 or even PC fixture should keep heat to a minimum even a small halide fixture would be fine unless your home is real hot. I use a 70watt halide over a 10 gal for my QT.

As to how to QT there are great reads in the sticky at the top of the forum so I wont waste my fingers on that. Just make sure you know the enemy well to know how long and what to treat with. I also keep a sixline wrasse in my QT because I know he eats flatworms and I didnt want him in my DT anymore. He also provides coral food through his poo!
