setting up QT tank

okay, I made a mistake by buying a six line wrasse and not qting it first. He is the first fish in my 45g. He has ich for 3 days now. I bought a 10g tank with the regular Aqua Clear filter, heater and some ich medication today. I've added the water from the main tank. What do I do now. I checked ph and nitrates both 0. I have a cannister filter and a Aqua Biofilter on the main tank. Do i take one of the filters out and put it into the QT filter? When do i add the wrasse to the QT and can i treat with the ich medication ICK GUARD.

I always use copper for ich. The setup you have is fine as is. You would like to keep the quarantine equipment just for quarnatine so you don't take a chance of transferring copper or other medications to your display tank. A littile light and lid wouldn't be a bad idea for jumpers especially when medicating.

pH of 0 doesn't make much sense... sure... it could happen. The acid would burn your eyes out from across the room, but you could have a pH of 0.

You probably mean "fine". pH should be about 8.3 which is a base rather than an acid.

Now... about your Ich. The medicine is likely copper based, unless it says you can use it in your reef. If it says you can use it in your reef, it's pretty much worthless. I don't know "Ick guard" but they spelled "Ich" wrong which couldn't be a good sign.

Read up on the treatment of Ich in the diease forums. Six weeks of Hyposalinity is the way to go... that or copper.

I have this stupid colour coded test kit from Aquarium Pharmaceuticals. I can't find the Salifert and I don't have a credit card thank god. The colour that i'm matching to on the chart for Phosphate is telling me 0.0ppm. Should i put one of the biofilters from the main tank in the QT tank or just leave it. I'll get the copper tomorrow. Another thing, why is it that he has spots at night and none during the day? Sounds crazy to me!

You said that you filled the 10gl from your display. That's good. Put the fish in and get it medicated as soon as possible. What you should know about ich is that the little white spots are not necessarily what kill the fish. The disease will in short time destroy the fleshy parts of their gills. After a week Take about 5gl out of the main display and put it in the qt as a 50%water change. Do this every week until the fish is better. Keep it in qt for a MINIMUM of 2 weeks after all symtoms are gone. 4 to 6 weeks is optimal.
