Setting Up Seahorse Tank

Title speaks for itself. I am setting up a Seahorse Tank and plan on getting H. Erectus pair. Anyone have personal experience, thoughts, ideas, advice on these guys and care. I won't be getting them for a few weeks and have the tank up and running now. I have read up on tons of sites and have things printed out. I've learned from just jumping into things, so this time I am taking it slow.

Good luck, I found them to be very difficult to keep (alive). They don't like a lot of water movement and I found them to be pretty finicky eaters. I had a 20 or 30 gallon refugium hooked up to a 90g tank which I think helped a lot but they still slowly declined.

I’ve had mine for three months now (picked them up at ABC's swap back in November)and they seem to be doing very well. They eat Hikari mysis 2-3 times a day and they are actually really good at hunting down any that settle on the rocks or sand. They have great personalities and I’ve had one of them hitch to my finger a couple of times.

+1 on their liking very little current. I have a 56 column with two female H. Erectus with only an Eheim 1250 return pump providing water movement and they still will find the places with almost no movement when they want to rest. That being said, they – one of them in particular – will move around a lot and occasionally play in the return flow.

You’ve probably been on seahorse.org and there are several people there who have quite a bit of flow in their tanks, you just have to get creative and spread it out a lot. I’m going to be getting a hang-on refugium and a larger return pump soon and I’m hoping that will help me to get a few more corals and keep them happy as well.

Good luck and keep us posted! What system have you set up for them?

Like tad said absolutely no flow they cant swim very well at all. The other thing is make sure you get some that have been in a store for a little bit don't get any that are new arrivals or really small
