I just purchased a 45g tank and bought 50 lbs live cured rock have the heater, hydrometer, test kit, sand (argonite 30lbs) salt of course, Jebo 805 cannister filter and 24 inch Aqualight T-5 10,000K light. Is this enough or what else do I need. I plan on buying a skimmer as well.

Sounds like a good start. Just avoid using the canister for running bio-media. Otherwise it may become a nitrate haven. On the other hand it can provide good circulation in a small tank. I'd also consider getting a digital pH meter as colorimetric pH testing is very inaccurate. An upgrade to a refractometer for salinity testing is also a good choice. Above all else get a good RO/DI and here is why RO/DI FAQ. This may also help The New Tank Thread

I have the filter running while cyclying is this okay and should i have the lights on or off. Also i have used tap water and have asked the sale assoc. in Big Als marine dept. and they said it's fine as long as i add the solution to reduce chlorine and chloromine. As i have seen on other marine chat that it's basically 50/50 on tap water.

By all means run the filter and also do large water changes. I hate to disagree with Big Al but water is the most important ingredient in one's tank use RO/DI FAQ and you will avoid some heartbreak (and wallet break too.) ;)

Would Canadian Tire have RO/DI I didn't pass biology or chemistry in high school so basically these techical terms are not sinking in. if not where and how much. thanks

That's all right as I never passed Goodyear 101 so I have no idea of Canadian Tires RO/DI output. :D

You can purchase bottled distilled at the local grocery. For a tank in your size range it may be fine. However, RO/DI units fall in price all the time and having ones own can save money in the long run. See the link I posted above for a rundown on Reverse Osmosis and Deionization details.

Thanks for the info. I was just looking at some RO/DI's and my mouth fell to the floor. I live in an apartment, so I can't go with that kind of system. I will try tap first and buy a cheap fish in a few weeks and see how that goes.
