Setup 75 Reef Tank

I am confused with the amount of flow. I have a sump and will be running a return pump plus not sure one or two powerheads. Any suggestions about powerheads and the amount of flow needed. I have been out for a few years but getting back setup. Thanks.

In general these numbers are thrown around in this hobby and generally accepted..

FLowrate through sump
3 to 10x display tank volume

Total flow in a tank (sump + powerheads)..
30x for softies/fish only
30-50x for LPS/higher flow corals..
50-75x or more for high flow SPS tanks..

I always shoot for about 40-50x if possible for my mixed reef tanks..

Question in my old tank every time i had high flow with 2 powerheads it blew everything around. I got an anemone and it kept getting thrown all over is that normal....

If flow is too high then yes things won't be happy..
Shoot for 30x as a start and see how it goes.. you can always add more powerheads if you want more flow..

I have a 75g. I use a eheim 2000 for return at about 50% flow. I use one maxspect gyre 250. It does well for what I have now but plan to add another during black Friday/cyber Monday deals. Mainly so I can run each lower in power. Hth.

I have a 75 gallon with a 20 gallon sump. I am using one PP8 Jebao power head. My return pump is also from Jebao DCP6000. I run it at a very low 10 watts settings. Everything in my tank is thriving and have a very good flow.

How do most of you position your power heads? Directly at each other? At the rock? Or into open water? I am running 2 hydor power heads with the wave maker

I position mine in the top back corners and point them towards the front pane. You can adjust your wave depending on where you have them make contact with the front pane. I also run 1 or 2 down low along the front and back. this helps keep detritus in suspension.

powerhead placement will depend largely on what you're rock scape looks like and what you're trying to keep.

when i had my 75, i used a powerhead on either end, about 60% of the way up the wall. one sort of ran flow behind my rocks, the other in front.

likely it will take some experimenting and adjusting. just see how things are moving, and try your best to adjust so you minimize or eliminate dead spots.

Use wave makers that have adjustable flow rates and speeds.
