Need a lil help. I want to set up a shroom zoo tank, its going to be 30gl long. Wanted to know what would be the ideal lighting for this size tank. Also will have some frogspawn in it.Do I need to have Metal Halides? Any recomendations you guys have are very greatful.

You don't HAVE to have MH but it has some nice benefits. That size tank I think you should go with a lower wattage bulb like 150 or 175w.

Or you could consider a T5 setup.

These 2 tanks have good results with just power compact lighting.

Im about to be setting me up a tank with the same corals (zoos/mushrooms) and i'm pretty sure im going to do the 175w MH retro.

So the short of this is.... no you don't have to have MH because you can get good results from PC and T5

I Use 2x96w compacts both 50/50 lamps and a 30w Blue Moon lamp on my 30g The tank is all soft coral. and will only be soft coral. I have ran it with only one of the 96w lamps the corals seem to respond favorably to a single 96w. he polyps do seem to open a little more with both lamps on.

Here is my 30g.

You can do a DIY 96w/2x96w very inexspensively if you are good with DIY stuff. Check at Innovative lighting for DIY Retro's

I just set up a 35 gal. about 5-6 weeks ago. It's the same foot print as a 29 gal but taller. I put a 130w PC with lunar lights and have had good results with mushrooms, candycane coral and xeinas. It does seem like a lot of people really like the t5s but just thought if you can only afford a PC for now it should work okay since the 30L is shorter and the light will penetrate better.
