Sex of BlueThroat Trigger

Hi all...
Have some questions...

1) Is it possible for Female to change to Male?

2) My LFS have a batch of female that are very small, 3 inch max...
Are they Juvi or really Female?

3) Would 1 of them change sex if i get 2-3 female?

Thanks...

Blue throat triggers are sexually dichromatic. Infact males are readily identified by having a strong intense yelllow outline on their caudal fin (tail), 2nd dorsal & anal fin. Whereas females have this same outline in dull brown.
How do you know the LFS has all females, at the size you mention their most likely all immature (juvi) animals.

The smaller ones like the ones that i reserved are 2-3 inches... They have black fin outline instead of dull brown...
The bigger female have brown outline, they also have Male, but i find them too big for my tank...
Would there be problem if the male is a lot larger than the females?

So their sex are determined the second they are born?

The others are going to grow as well :)

No doubt but i rather get them small and slowly see it grow up... THe different betweent the female and male he have is 1:3... which is a very big different...

I've raised little 3" BCT to adulthood, it takes about 1 yr and they get big. An adult blue cheek is a good sized fish. Also they are larger when sexually mature so if the bigger ones are already too big for your tank, Don't expect to bred these fish. I'd say a 125-180 gal tank maybe be adequate althou 180 is prolly a better choice.
I don't think it will be a problem is a female is bigger- their bossy already
IIRC yes these fish are born one sex or the other

I'm not sure about that. One of the guys in my Local Aquarium club had a pair that were spawning in his tank and then after the hurricanes the female turned in to a male. They are in a 210G tank. I am not sure what factors would have caused the female to turn to a male but I would have them order some more males. I have seen males in the 3" range at the LFS. I have had a small female for the past year and I feed it atleast twice a day(Nori in the AM along with some spectrum and then in the evening Mysis, spectrum and silversides heads to help grind the teeth down) and it has only grown about 1". Good luck..they really are great fish with lots of personality

So if i buy small Juveniles there might be a chance that some will grow up to be male/female...

Hmmm... It is really difficult to distinguish them during Juvenile stage... Sigh...

BTW what size is considered Juvenile? Below 3 inch?
