So i bought all the water for my 75 gallon from my LFS, ive only added, live rock, sand, and live rock. the water i bought was supposedly 1.025 sg. I got home today to check the para. the first think i checked was SG, it comes out to be 1.028 :O im not upset, but i need to get it down. how do i get it down? Can i just do water changes with just plain RO water, since i don't have any coral/fish etc. or is 1.028 fine for a peaceful FOWLR?

If there is no livestock in the tank then just do the water change like you stated - take out tank water an replace with Ro/di water. Since this tank water is "new" you may wan to store it in a container with a powerhead for future use.

I would so exactly what you said. I wouldnt be to concerned about doing it too fast seeing as how you don't have any livestock yet. If you have a cleanup crew, then I'd do it over 3-4 days just to be safe. Just don't drop it to low! Do smaller changes and wait an hour or so before doing more. Testing before doing more.

That is actually a very acceptable level, and is the worlds' oceans' average level. Did you happen to calibrate your refractometer, or are you using a plastic swing arm specific gravity reader?

I would take your plastic hydrometer into a shop which has a refractometer and have them compare your tester's results to make sure it is in the ball park (accuracy wise). Just look out for micro air bubbles giving you false high readings.
You will always loose salt concentration very slowly over time due to salt "creepage" outside the tank, so I intentionally keep my concentration/SG right at the upper end of that average range, about 1.0260 or a smidge above, knowing it will slowly fall until I correct with a water change (or doing top off replacement with salt water instead of fresh RO/DI).

you can buy a glass floater/bobber for 10 bucks and is plenty good for fish only, use them for years myself. Dont waste your time with the swing arm ones, a little salt build up on the arm will throw them off if you dont rinse it everytime you use it
