When I set mine up, I treated it exactly as I would a deep sand bed. You need good circulation around it, adequate diversity (who knows?), and proper grain size (xx fine). These should help with a successful ssb. Some prefer to siphon, vaccuum, etc., but I have never found this necessary. There are many variables involved, so you may or may not find yourself siphoning to maintain it. However, IMO, if you meet the requirements above, it will minimze what you must do to maintain it long-term.
