OK. Here's the water setup that I said I would post pictures on. It's funny IMO that I would do this, let alone not getting any grief from the wife. Anyhow, the bathroom this is in is about 12 feet away from the tank. And since we really don't use this bathroom, I figured why the heck not! I have three more anyways. LOL

We call this our distillery. All I need now is the copper condensing coil and a fire and we be making moonshine without the feds finding out. LOL

The black trash can holds 26 gals of the salt mix. I have a heater and powerhead inside. The blue 5 gal drink water bottle is where I keep my fresh RODI water for top-off system.

All suggestions are welcome, just keep in mind this is temporary until we buy a house one day.

A suggestion I could use is how to transfer the saltwater from the black trash can to the tank ( i suppose a submersible pump?). I bought some tubing and a pump that hooks to a drill. BIG MISTAKE! Water went everywhere (luckily in the tiled bathroom) when the hose pulled away from the drill operated pump. Plus I immediately stopped the water transfer since I noted that the internals of the pump mechanism had been packed with a Vaseline looking grease. Luckily that was caught before putting the good water into the tank! After that, it was scooping out water gal-by-gal into the aquarium.

I use a maxijet 1200, i use 1/2" clear tubing and i jam it on the output of the MJ, try to make it air tight, and then drop it in the trash can and turn it on. I do the same things for water changes. Just get a good length of tubing to reach the bottom of your can up to the tank.

That's what I thought. I have to say, believe it or not, my brown algae is pretty much completely gone since I switched over to the RODI water. My first water change was about 20-25 gallons from the setup in the picture.

I do the same thing with an extra pump, and tubing. I use a remote control outlet for the pump, seeing how I'm about 10 feet away

How long do you guys let the water circulate the salt before doing your water changes. I'm looking at doing a 15% water change every two weeks and then immediately afterwards, refilling the trash can with RODI and mix. I guess there's nothing wrong with letting the saltwater mix for two weeks?

I usually do around 24hrs. Every now and then I do a little less, like 12hrs if I am in a hurry and didnt prepare well.

IMHO 24 hours is optimum. You could get away with a few hours if your in a pinch.
