Sharing Pics of new Pseudanthias Pictilis!

Evening all,

I have been looking/waiting for a healthy pair of these for quite a while and finally a couple came my way. LFS brought them in, and we let them sit in a quite corner of the shop for a couple weeks to make sure they were healthy in general.

I have now brought them home where they are in QT where I expect they will be for a while. They are not shy and are very hearty.

The big question of course is the feeding. Thus far they are eating Fish Roe heartily as well as Nutramar Ova. These also pick at frozen Cyclopeeze as well as frozen brine. At this time I continue to try 10-12 different frozen foods multipel times a day. I expect over time they will settle in.

Ultimately if they become hearty eaters, they will move into the 220g with other Anthias.

I will keep this thread updated with progress and hopefully long term success.

For fun, here are some pics of other males I have in the 220g:

Beautiful combination of anthias, how are the lori's?

Initially they were fairly difficult. I started with a trio. The larger of the three ate fairly well from the start, mainly cyclopeeze and Ova. The two smaller ones not much at all. A week in, one of them started picking at the cyclopeeze. The third never would eat anything and ultimately starved.

The larger cotinued to eat well and moved on to all other frozen foods. The one left continued to be picky until one day out of the blue, it began to everyting with gusto. At this point both Lori's are hearty eaters.

Not an anthias I woudl suggest to anyone who is not willing to invest the time and options on the feeding front.

Thanks for the detailed account on the lori's, and congrats on the new additions, they look very healthy.

Keep us posted. I love these fish. If I could guarantee they would eat, I too would try them.

Awesome-looking pair of pictilis. I had a heart-breaking experience with a male pictilis, who ate frozen mysis heartily at the LFS, and continued to eat frozen mysis, frozen brine, and cyclopeeze in my tank for about a month. Then one day, for no reason apparent to me, just stopped eating everything. I offered every type of food I could think of (nutramar ova, NLS flake and pellets, Rod's, tigger pods, live brine) to no effect. I wish you much better luck.

I agree, I love these fish... but I can never get them to eat fore more than a few months... they always stop. I've tried varying their diet more and less, even in a tank with no other fish (quarintine tank) and always the same ending... best of luck, I'm pulling for you

Thanks all for the feedback and encouragement.

There is no doubt that I am committed to their success. I am hoping that one key may be that they are a fairly decent size and of good health when they came in. They are not shy by any means, so again, I will work for the best.

I will keep all posted.

Thanks again!

They are both eating well on a mix of Nutramar Ova and Fish Roe. I am traveling this week, so after spending the weekend working with different foods, it was clear that they were happy with these two.

My wife feeds them 3 times a day a mix of the two mentioned, and she has commented that they are very aggressive when feeding with no hesitation (after 20 years of helpign keep the fish as I travel, she has a good eye!).

Anyhow, will be home Friday and will begin to work other foods into this mix and see of I can broaden the food taken. I know they were picking at the cyclopeeze and the grated Roggers Food this past weekend, but I didn't feel comfortable forcing it on them when I wasn't present.

I will get a video of them feeding up this weekend. I think the aggressiveness in which they are currently eating is promising.

As I mentioned, I have all the time in the time in the world and tank space to work with them. The goal here is long term success.

Here is a Video of the Pictilis eating today. I made a few comments in the video of the process that is going one.

Let me know if you have any questions.

UPDATE

Both are now eating Frozen Brine!! THis is a nice milestone as it at least shows me they are willing to broaden thier diet.

At this point they readily eat Fish Roe, Nutramar Ova, and Hikari Frozen Brine (w/spirulina).

I will let them settle in with this for a wek or two more and then begin to try to mix in some other types of food.

So far so good.
