There are a lot of diseases sharks can get. The most common is a bacterial infection, generally on the belly, caused by rough substrate and physical abrasions.
Do you have a copy of Scott Michael's "Aquarium Sharks & Rays"? There is an entire chapter on health issues.
I just got notification today that the Elasmobranch Husbandry Manual is online - people can download individual chapters. Remember though, this was written with public aquariums in mind, so there will not be "newbie warnings" such as, "Don't put a nurse shark in a 100 gallon tank).
