Sharks 2

Please don't lock my topic before I have a chance to reply. Really? It's that important it needs to quickly be locked? Some appear to have far to much free time. If you don't want me here I honestly couldn't care less. Having said that I do appreciate the responses in last thread. I admitted I know nothing about saltwater aquariums. Since my last post I have talked to a marine biologist, with a PhD. She indicated that very few people in the world, and absolutely Nobody in the hobby should have big shark's. The care needed is more than people can do. It was mentioned that she has personally seen Mako's reach 11 feet and 700 lbs, few are born in captivity and none survive being owned by hobbyist's. The tank needed would be at least a million dollars, it would be the only fish in there and I would need a permit from the state to even own one. That's not going to happen.

Research, academia, public aquariums are the only entities that have and should have them

Our tank in new home will be 5000 gallons ( since people needed to know) I personally wanted an Amazon rain forest North American game fish tank. I had 8 red bellied Piranhas before moving here but had to give them up.
I'd be happy with large mouth bass, crappie and trout but I'm told that at 5000 gallons freshwater tank would be a waste.

Since the holier than thou crowd showed up, I have done my own research and found that bamboo sharks and coral cats would be fine. I'm afraid of a beat down asking what I can put in there with them, so I'll ask the biologist. Thanks for the warm welcome

so you started another post, simply to whine about the reception you got on your first post?

There are plenty with a wealth of knowledge here. I'd hazard a guess we would do better to answer most questions than a marine biologist. Simply because the biologist may know more about a specific species or fish, but unless said biologist keeps a reef tank, we know more about that. But you questioned why you couldn't keep a shark that through a simple google search you would have seen that get huge. Come on now.

Now for what you can keep with it, i'll refer you to the FWOLR section of our forum, one that has some very knowledgeable shark people floating around. And specifically, this thread that is one of my favorite builds on here. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2432500

It sounds like you might be happier at the NANFA forum. (North American Native Fish Association) I'm a member there too and keep natives but I'm branching into saltwater now hence my membership here too. Whatever you want to do with your giant tank, I'm sure it will be awesome and you'll be able to find "your people"

Your topic wasn't closed because of you. I had to clean it up and locked it because of someone else.

who said a 5000 gallon freshwater tank would be a waste? i think that would be awesome!

especially if it was heavily planted and hardscaped like an Amazon river? that would be incredible. some of my favorite tanks at any public aquariums i visit are the huge freshwater ones.

just a note about sharks, they tend to do best in round or racetrack shaped tanks. helps them not bump and grind their noses on hard corners like they would in a square or rectangular tank. just something to consider, some are better suited than others to different tank shapes.

If you're planning on sharks, I hope your massive tank is a race track tank or at least had rounded corners so a shark wouldn't be harmed. There's plenty of fish that go nicely with sharks, and I'm sure if you rephrase your question and chill out, people will be more than happy to help out. Otherwise, just ask your marine biologist friend or Google :)

Listen gang, this new member is here for advice and help. If you have nothing productive to add please don't post. Many of you know better.

Most fish are fine with cat sharks. They mostly eat shrimp and snails. You will need to iodine suppliment for a cat shark.

Not to drive this further in the ditch but is the "new to the hobby" section the appropriate place for a 5000G shark tank build?

Its someone new to the hobby, asking a question. Why shouldn't it be here?

If actually completed it would be one of the largest and most complex builds on this forum and the beginners that frequent this sections will not be able to help much with a massive build like.

I'm not trying to offend anyone but this particular part of the forum is filled with people still struggling with basic care elements and not ready to run a public aquarium in their home.

No offense taken of course, but this section is for newbies to ask questions and get answered by experienced hobbyists. Not just for newbies to gather. Given he is new and inexperienced this would still be the place for him to direct his questions. Along with large tank builds and aggressive builds for sure. Though the point is moot because pretty sure he isn't coming back at this point.

And MondoBongo I know right!? That forum section is so sparsely used I think a lot just don't look at it. But his build is incredible. I look at my pool all the time and wonder what it could be as a fish tank because of that thread haha.
