when a bottle goes off will it have a very pungent odour (like rotten eggs?) and when it does is it still safe to use?

I have a barely used bottle well within use by dates and always refrigerated which overnight went from smelling like the ocean to a pungent rotten egg smell really hoping I can still use it but assuming the answer will be that I can't.

No, if it smells horrid, do not use it.

FWIW check your refrigerators temp. It should be around 38F. If you are running higher, or keeping the SD in the door, it won't last as long.
