Shifting Currents

I have 2 powerheads (each flowing just over 1000 GPH) on opposing sides of my tank. I have them each running for 20 minutes then switching over to the other run and running for the same amount of time. I am truly trying to get an understanding on whether this has any advantage at all. I know many people do it but it seems to me if I had both running all the time bouncing off glass and rock they would create more random and chaotic flow then one running then the other running...I would like to see what people have to say about this

I'd leave them both running and point them at each other.
